Matthew 5:39
But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Luke 6:29
And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also.

Nonchristians, when is the last time a Christian has given you their coat? Not an extra coat, but the one they were currently wearing.

Atheists, when is the last time you have insulted a Christian and he/she has said hit me again I can take it?

This simply cannot and will not happen. Was Jesus high or something? This whole cheek turning thing is probably what got him killed. Shouldn't you just ignore this little passage and instead deal out counter insults to the atheists? Eye for an eye is so much more fun.

ammasmomma, why should I watch what I say about Jesus? Is he gonna come down from heaven and turn a cheek for me to prove himself right? Please! If your Jesus is going to send me to hell for eternity, I am going to make certain I have earned an eternity of suffering.

Vlady00, I have read the bible, cover to cover actually, and some books more than 10 times. Just because I consider different views and bring things into question does not mean I have not read or do not understand. Don't be so naive. Objective thinking is a crucial part of the learning process. And my face? I was shot in the head. I'm already dead.

Smile4cobra, it IS my place to insult God and it IS my place to judge. Why? Because I am better than your God. I know how to forgive those who do not want it. I know what unconditional love means. You say it is ok for Christians to not live by the teachings of Christ as long as they ask for forgiveness. What a waste. Why obey traffic law if I can just ask for forgiveness? Heck, why pay attention to any rule or law if I can simply ask for forgiveness. It is a sign of a hypocrite to preach one thing and do another. It is a display of weakness to promote a belief system you cannot follow. I have no trouble at all following mine. And as for you trusting your father as a child... when I was a child, I thought as a child, spoke as a child, and acted as a child. But when I became a man I put away childish things. I learned how to think for myself, speak for myself, and act according to a code of ethics I see fit for myself. I am victorious in this, as you and your friends fail and repent.

Although I see the point you're trying to make....

Look at Gandhi's example. This is one of the few reasonable quotes in the bible. Evil has nowhere to thrive unless it is resisted. Evil is overcome with good, not resistence. "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind".

The problem is that Most Christians don't believe in these 'passive' verses, they cherry-pick.

Much more fun?

On a personal level perhaps but when you think on the greater fabric of life his teachings are pinpoint accurate. Some of the writings in the bible are not meant to be taken literally. They serve as examples and ideals of how to live a full, peaceful, loving life. But to that extent- he will also help you fight the evil that presents itself in your life.

Read the old testament if you want a mean God. If you are singling out Jesus look what he did to the people who were trading/selling things in the cathedral. He whipped them and kicked them out. He actually destroyed the structure.

But enough of biblical accounts- it is very apparent you have not read the bible in any detail because your comment.

Before you try to question Jesus, read the bible and understand its meaning.

(BTW- in your picture – did you try busting a pimple on your forehead?)

It is not for you to insult God or Son of God and it surely is not for you to judge.

Infact, it is not for any of us to judge. Christians believe in what they believe in. Thats their choice. You believe what you believe in or you believe in nothing at all. Thats your choice. You may even choose to be a Muslim, Bahai, Catholic, etc. Whatever you choose its your choice. Not for any "person" to judge.

Even if what is written in the Bible is incorrect and Im not saying it is...its not bad. What you have there seems to me like its telling us not to fight, not to hate, two wrongs doesnt make a right, to forgive, to love and to try and be good people.

As for you comments...

"Nonchristians, when is the last time a Christian has given you their coat? Not an extra coat, but the one they were currently wearing"

and...

Atheists, when is the last time you have insulted a Christian and he/she has said hit me again I can take it?

Nobody says Christians are perfect. Nobody says Christians dont get greedy, dont sin, etc. And if they do say it, they are wrong. EVERYBODY does. We are all human. Only human.

I am a Christian but I am no better than you are. You sin, I sin. We will always sin. For the rest of our lives. Because we are not God. We are not perfect.

There have been many times that I have turned the other cheek because I was able to at the time and many times when I lost my cool and ripped a new one in the guy or tell everyone and their moms off but later I realize that I commited sin. Thats not what God wants from me but I lost control because Im only human. And its ok...

Because the door swings both ways...as long as I forgive and try not to keep hate in my heart and try not to do it again, try my hardest to be a good person,God forgives me.

I am Christian because Im not perfect and I need to be saved.

I try my hardest not to make any decisions, actions, etc. with the theory of an eye for an eye cause when it comes down to it and its time that I stand before the Lord and answer for the bad things I done in my life and believe me you I committed every sin in the book, if he decides based off the eye for an eye theory...its not going to be so "fun".

God works in ways that a human mind does not have the capability to understand. That is why he is God and we are not. There are things that we can never understand but we do not question God. We believe and trust.

When I was a child and my dad would put my shoes on take my hand and walk out with me, put me in the car and we were off. There were many times that I didnt ask where we were going. Because I know him, I trust him and I was carefree as I knew that there was no fear when I was with him because he loves me and was protected.

I dont need to question God. I dont know where he is taking me but I know he is my Father and when Im with him there is no fear.

God loves us both equally. Even though you may not believe or may not know him well but he knows you as you are his child as well.

So if your wondering still..

"Shouldn't you just ignore this little passage and instead deal out counter insults to the atheists? "

Naaaaahhhhh.

God Bless you.

no, actually jesus was right, and that was how it was supposed to be, turn the other cheek, and thats how it was. he died for our sins, because he had to, mister bible quoter. and lastly, the reason that you think this way, young man, is because people are completely and totally screwed, and have lost all hope, the next generation of americans, are so totally screwed, that its not even funny, its very sad, noone does these things anymore because noone cares about anything or anyone but themselves, and thats the bottom line, jesus is and always will be right, you my friend, as well as all other people, are the ones who are completly and totally wrong

Just because Christian people don't always do what Jesus said, can you logically conclude that Jesus was wrong? I can't follow the reasoning. Since Jesus was the one who proved His divinity by dying and resurrecting, wouldn't it be more reasonable to give more credence to His words and actions than to the words and actions of His followers?

you're wrong. i know for a fact that there are Christians that actually do the right thing. sorry to hear that your experience wasn't that great. don't judge Christians or Jesus by the kind of people you met. What actually got Jesus killed, was the Pharisee's envy, by the way.

C'mon man, you know christians will never actually live up to their savior's teachings. They just want credit for saying they believed in him and hope he comes back to kill all those that said they didn't.

Don't waste your life believing in christian mythology.

Religion is an out-dated idea that continues to die.

The future will be more secular and better off too.
