what makes me think they dislike the carefresh is that they throw it out of all the places they sleep and play. i have cut up some toliet paper rolls and they have used that to put in there beds instead but I need something I can buy in bulk.

There home is a three story cage, the only reason I feel that I need to find a bedding they like is because the 2nd and 3rd floors have wire floors and they like to sleep on these floors. I have one house that has a solid bottom where they usually like to sleep on the 2nd floor but on the top floor where one of them loves to sleep the 3 homes i have for her have no bottoms and the wire floor looks so uncomfortable for her. Like I said she just throws the carefresh and the cotton fluff bedding out of her house.

Just go to Petsmart, or any other decent pet store and have a look at what they have to offer, there's loads to choose from.
Stay away from cedar or pine shaving tho - or any wood shaving really. Not good for rodents. Anything papery is fine - shredded paper is nice for them to burrow into. I give my mices 'safe bedding' as a substrate (that's paper flakes Petsmart do, sounds like the stuff you're using though) and shredded paper to burrow into.
Rats don't always want bedding though, so try a few different types with them but if they always chuck it out of their beds or whatever then don't worry about it - have some bedding their for them, it's there if they want it and if they don't, then fine..

I have five rats and the one thing they hate the most is wooden shavings, don't get any kind of store bought shavings, some can be very harmful to rats. I use shreded paper, it works great, all you do is buy a paper shreder and throw in old envelopes and paper you don't need any more. they like being able to crawl through it so get the paper shreders that cut horizontaly and vertical. It saves you alot of money and a trip out to the pet store.

I know what Carefresh is--I use it for my hamster and gerbil. But for the rats, you might want to use the aspen shavings or even shredded newspaper. Don't use cedar. I've been told that the strong fumes really damage rodents.

The care fresh bedding is really absorbent stuff and works great. If your rats don't seem to care for it, but you still want to use and get rid of it (since it is so darn expensive), you can always put a layer of aspen wood shavings over the top of a layer of care fresh. That is what I do for my 2 little girls. Please do not use any cedar shavings as they contain phenols that can irritate a rat's respiratory tract. Good luck!

I don't know if they have this in America, but in Australia there is this stuff called Breeder Choice, it's basically just rolled newspaper, it's really good. But youcan also train your rats to use a litter tray, www.dapper.com.au has a article on it, so you can use towels and stuff as their bedding. It saves money too,

i have two rats and i have experimented w/ many different types of bedding. i learned that they love shredded paper and newspaper but they also like cat litter. they are using cat litter right now and it lasts longer than any other bedding i have tried. it is easy to clean because u use a cat pooper scooper and it is very simple. and the fresh scent of some cat litter brands eliminates some of the odor!

I, as many other guinea pig owners, use fleece on top of a few towels for the bedding. It is very easy to clean, seeing as you wash it once a week, and very cheap because you buy it once and it will last for quite a while. Maybe your rat will like it?

We've had rats and they seem to like pine bedding. It's more of a shredded wood and it's not prickly or anything. It's nice and our rats love to dig around in the stuff. We also gave them a nice wooden house in their cage....They love it!!

they might just be hot, i can't imagine that they dislike their bedding. before i used carefresh, i used corn cob bedding and aspen. though i haven't noticed that my rats have a preference for any of the three.
