My son's birthday is coming up...wanted to have a backyard birthday but wanted to hear some other ideas of what to serve! It seems like within families certain foods are just traditional...I would like different opinions. Thank you!

Back yard birthdays don't necessarily mean barbecuing! You didn't mention your son's age, but I suspect that he's younger than 12, so you'll be having lots of kids running around. Here are some ideas:

1. Create your own sundae bar using 3 kinds of ice creams, toppings, etc.
2. Pizza, hot dogs, and hamburgers (traditional, yes)
3. Carrots and celery stix with ranch dressing
4. Chicken tenders and french fries (homemade using boneless, skinless chicken breasts)
5. Burger surprises (stuff your burgers before cooking with a variety of cheeses such as mozarella, feta, or blu)
6. Chili dogs
7. KFC
8. Fruit kabobs with a yogurt dressing
9. Egg Rolls and apricot dipping sauce
10. Taquitos

I'm assuming there are going to be adults? I might suggest kabobs that have been marinated(and you might think offering some kabobs with steak, some with chicken, and maybe some of pork). Along with it a baked bean cassarole (get Bush's baked beans in the can and add to it a little sliced white onions, sauteed bacon bites{don't let them get to the crispy stage and blot the bites off before adding them and stirring them into the beans} & top it off with lots of cheddar/jack cheese), a macaroni or potato salad. For the kids you can make BBQ hot dogs and what I like to do is take the hamburger meat and instead of flattening the ball into a patty roll it into a hot dog shape. That way whichever one the kids chose could go into a hot dog bun. I have other ideas but this is long enough, lol. Hope your party is a blast!

Its always fun to grill and have a cookout. I would get some hamburger meat, hot dogs, or chicken breasts - they are always good for sandwitches. Potato salad, cole slaw, and veggies will be easy to buy in bulk for the party and are usually cheap.

For a little kick, you may want to grill some ribs. I have perfected a recipe for ribs that includes BBQ sauce that cant be beat. Try baking them and finishing them on the grill and then watch people fight over em. Its fun and messy and the kids will love em. THere are great recipes all over the net.

It depends on how old your son is. When my son was 8, we had a huge birthday party at the park. We had hotdogs, chips & pickles and all of the fixings for them to make there own ice cream sundae. We played kickball, had a scavenger hunt. It was lots of fun.

For my daughters last birthday (12). We had sloppy joes with chips and snacks.

Burgers and hotdogs on the barbie are always great

As are kabobs, ribs, fish, clams, vegetables and fruit. You can even cook pizza on a grille

How about getting your son involved with planning his party? That way you'll know he and his buddies are getting food they like.

Depending on his age.... pigs in a blanket (hot dog, slice of cheese, slice of bread folded to make a triangle with the dog and chse inside are fun. If you have a fire pit and again depending on age, we made "mountain pies" butter bread like your making grill chse and fill with pizza sauce chse and pepperoni, for dessert your fav pie filling. The pie makers can be bought at a sporting goods store. We had 4 makers and each kid took turns creating their sandwich and took turns "grilling" them in the open fire pit. Hamburgers and dogs on the grill are good too. Ice cream cakes were always a hit with my kids.

I say order enough pizzas to feed everyone they are about $6-7 a piece, you don't have to cook and you can make a cake for the group for dessert. Kids love pizza.

fire up your grill and since he will be busy with his friends that will give you time to entertain adults as well. Usually have a friend of mine that automatically cooks so I am busy doing other things. Chicken is always good and hot dogs. don't forget the buns. enjoy.
