I'm just a yank, here, but have an opinion as a combat veteran from Vietnam. I was a 1st Lt there and led small groups called LRRPs into enemy territory on 3-5 day missions and hunter/killer missions. If I were the enemy and knew that such an important person was on the ground, he would become my number one target. And most of us know that being within a country as an outsider in an insurgency means that anyone IS the enemy. You stand out, they blend in. Launching an attack to abduct or kill one person in a specific location is just too easy because they can concentrate more forces than you can assimilate to guard that person. It may not be the macho decision, but it is the smart decision and, I think, the correct one. I respect you monarchy while recognizing the problems and expense inherent to it. Also, he can use his training in staff positions or maybe later in conventional war if necessary so the training isn't totally wasted. Here's a wish for the return of all your lads to safety and the Prince. One Glen Livet, neat and warm, "Here's to us and those like us, Damn few, And most of 'em dead."

Whatever happened to 'D Notices'?
Anything under a D Notice was not printable or reportable by the British Press. Was it that the foreign press would have published it anyway?
I find myself in both camps on this question because I have a Son-in-Law who has just come back from Basra having been shot at, been subjected to rocket and mortar attack for four months and come back with scratches and bruises. This is the most dangerous time since the 'war' started.
The Queen has her Son who is no more precious than anyone else yet he will not be required to get the same exposure to reality of 'war'.
His Grandfather did, his Grandmother did but perhaps times have changed.

If the media had stayed out of it then no one would of been the wiser but as they published when he would be going out what regiment etc they made it pretty easy for the enemy to go after him. I believe they have made the correct choice in keeping him at home as it would only jeopardise the rest of his regiment as they would be fighting and also protecting Harry cause if they did capture him just think what ransom's they would have over us.
I do not believe it is a complete waste of TAX payers money, this is due to the media once again pushing details that they should not, it is not ground breaking news that the prince may go and fight in Iraq as there are already thousands out there doing just that.
Maybe if the media leave alone then he may go later on
My partners niece left for Iraq last Thursday and I wish her everyone out there well and hope everyone comes back very soon. Lets just get out of there and let them fight amongst themselves

Simply it is about his troop being targetted because of who he is. If the MoD had kept quiet and the british press, as usual, not reported it there wouldn't be a problem.
As for the "what the b l o o d y hell did we waste money on training him for" comment, do you not realise that 3/4 of military personnel aren't front-line combatants? The air force have 200 people supporting each pilot (from the riggers, sooties tending the aircraft to the guy serving his lunch in the mess)

I fail to see how the enemy would of known he was over there if it hadn't of been for the media notifying them(think they give the game away as usual ). Why didn't the MD keep it under wraps . I do agree with what you have said . His training should of been geared to what he could or done rather then what he will never be allowed to do .What a waste of training and money spent on it . I don't blame him he wants to go and fight .

This is really a British issue, yet as a yank, I can see both sides of it.
Harry indeed is in line to the throne. As I understand it, Harry is in the same position King George, Queen Elizabeths father, was in when The Prince of Wales, abdicated. So, Harry is within range, if Charles and William were no longer in the picture.
As a British subject, I can see your side of it, too ! As we say in the US, 'he puts his pants on the same way I do, one leg at a time.' Simply stated, he's no better than the rest of us. Yet, in Great Britain, many people feel differently about the Royal family, so I guess it depends on which side of that ledger you fall, that will decide your feelings about Harry.
In Harry's defense, he is adament about going. He feels the national pride of being part of his unit and doing his duty. Yet, it isn't just about Harry, so he needs to get past it, if his superiors decide otherwise.

When I see our soldiers in action on t/v I always look to see of I know anyone because I have 2 nephews out there. It is almost impossible to recognise anyone when they are wearing all their gear so I do not see how they can possibly recognise Harry. It has been said that they have a good intelligence system so that they will know where he is. There system must be far in front of ours because we have been looking for Bin Laden for years and still do not have a clue as to where he is. That in itself speaks volumes. If Harry does not go then that means we are an officer short so let the person who has put him out of harms way take his place. Failing that let us move all of our soldiers out of harms way.

Because they are a bloody bunch of morons! He looks nice in his uniform and makes daddy and the old people proud. The royals are a big waste of money (I'll gloss over the tourism.) If he went to war, not only would he die, but his soldiers would be a much bigger target. Surely he's just cannon fodder like the rest of them?

This is a no win situation if he was allowed to go & he was grabbed.Everyone will probably scream what idiot allowed him to go especially if other soldiers lives are lost trying to protect him.Andrew went to the Falklands that was a different
war. This one they would go all out to grab harry remember they would not care how many of them died trying. If this was the usual war he would be going.
