For me, I live in New Jersey, just outside NYC. The town alternates between paper and commingle, with a pick up every week- the day depends on the section of town you reside in. For example, I am in Section 4 and recycling is usually on Thursdays. This week was papers. Next week is Plastics. They accept Yard Wastes every week from March to December. The town provides a Commingle bin- all glass and plastics can go in it. My area goes a step further by an Electronics and Hazardous Waste days where the county sets up a drop off site to dispose of batteries or televisions, stuff that really doesnt belong in the garbage or recycle. They accept stuff from like motor oils and paints. They have those days usually every 3 or 4 months, and typically has very long lines. I typically have my recycling bins in my garage. My hazardous wastes, like batteries and some bulbs are in a box, usually ready to go when they have a HW day. My town lists the savings and revenue produced by recycling.

DO COMPOST:
- uncooked vegetable peelings, salad and fruit
- "soft" garden waste such as grass clippings, hedge trimmings and leaves.
- shredded paper
- cardboard (ripped into smaller strips with any sellotape/plastic/staples removed)
- tea bags and coffee grounds
DON'T COMPOST:
- cooked food
- meat/bones
- fish
- dairy products
- cat/dog litter/poo
- large logs/pieces of wood
- coal ash
Around 30% of the household waste currently sent to landfill sites could be composted instead so it's well worth making the effort.

Pretty much everything except meat and bones can be composted. Just get yourself a small kitchen composter. Then the compost can be added to your kitchen.

You can add almost all of it to your compost pile, garden or flower beds. Did a hole between plants, put it in.
Do not add seeds, bones, and I've heard dairy products.
