I have a tattoo of a black spider on my shoulder which I've grown to hate. It's a bit bigger than if you put your finger and thumb together to make a circle. It's faided quite a bit also over the past 5years. I just wondered if anyone knew if it was only black ink that can cover it or could it be covered with a colour? Please help!

I've spoken to a tattooist since posting the question and he says that because it is mostly shaded then faded it can be covered with a colour. A purple or a blue would work well but the design is more than likely going to have to be a flower of some sort to help blend in the original tattoo. I'm not a flowery person so I will have to get my thinking cap on. Thank you for all your responses.

Hey Alison. I think that you are going to be amazed at what a tattoo artist who specializes in cover up tattoos can do. Black can be covered up with color in MOST cases. The following link has over 400 examples of awesome coverup tattoos. Take a look at all the possiblities.

It all depends on how dark it really is. Some people have no choice but to do laser removal and even then there is not a 100% guarantee. Some of the inks do not go away completely with lasers. The other suggestion of putting white ink over it won't work. Depending on how much it faded it MAY be possible to cover it up. Only maybe though. I've seen coverups that you would never think that the original dark piece could be covered the way it was (with colors) and turn out as well as it did. Trouble is, do you want something bigger than what you have already? The design for a coverup is obviously limited to having to fit around the original design and is limited by how big you want to go. All you can do at the moment is to talk to many many tattoo artists and research the people you talk to. Make sure you're talking to someone who actually knows what the hell they are talking about. Some artists will want to cover just for the money, others wouldn't even try and will tell you to get lasered. Others will be able to work with what you have, but from there it may or may not be colorful. Just talk to the artists right now and your options will be narrowed down. I wish you the best and I hope that whatever happens, you will be happy with the results. Take care!! ^_^

It can be done, but it takes a really good cover up artist, which are few and far between. They have different techniques for shading and blending to cover up or at least minimize the appearance of the old tattoo. The drawback being that they often need to go much larger than the original tattoo. For example, in this coverup, the old tattoo had lots of black, yet the coverup has plenty of vivid color: http://www.tattoosbystacy.com/EricP.html

I had initials that were in black covered with another black tattoo. The artist said that's the only way to go. Go consult with a few tattoo places and get ideas from different artists. I'm sure together you guys can come with a piece of artwork that you'll like.

A black tattoo can be covered. Probably by another black tattoo. a bigger one. if your feeling up to something like that. My mom had a bear paw on her leg, all black, only to find out years later that it was a dog paw, so she got it covered with a colored tat. And the black paw bled right through. Occasionally, if you find a supreme artist, they can cover it with colors. But your options there will be limited. like what colors you'll be able to use. But what I would do in your position is go to a lot of tattoo parlors and ask seperate artists about cover ups. most of them keep pictures. see which ones are good at it. get to know them.

I have a tattoo that was very badly messed up by the "artist" (should be called a butcher) who did it, I have consulted a different tattoo artist about it since and he said that black can only really be covered with black successfully. Take your time to choose a design to cover it or you could just be making matters worse.

the best way to cover a black tattoo is... with a black tatto... unless it's really faded it's going to be difficult to cover it up so you can't see it through the colours. white ink won't necessarily make a difference - can't fade it to gray. so... a dark tattoo on top, or laser removal?

Possibly. Talk to your artist. Black is typically hard to cover but significant fading could make the process easier.

If you write on paper with a black pen, can you cover it with coloured pens?
Not really, it'd look a mess.

It will have to be completely removed before covering it with a coloured tattoo
otherwise, bad idea.
good luck
