I work with a church youth group this age- they always need activities to release that energy.
A few ideas that may be popular:
Serve or have them make poi and eat it the traditional way with their fingers.
Contests to carve pineapples or coconuts.
Contests to build Tiki gods out of wood, mud or clay.
Firestick twirling contest (lightsticks taped to ends of broom sticks or dowels)
Limbo
Hula- each kid can invent a silly interpretive dance for the others to guess it's meaning (like dancing charades).
Make Leis.
Sand castles.
Bury a pig in coals in back yard - I have a friend that does this annually.
Firewalk pit can be substituted with ice cubes (endurance contest).
Invent coconut boccie.
Supply clay for best volcano contest.
Tie-die shirts.
"Pomaika`i" (Good luck!)

i am also throwing a lua and i found a bowling set. the pins are pineapples and the bowling balls are coconuts. we have tea bag lights, and lanterns. we're getting giant palm trees to put at the end of the driveway. get some yard games like badminten( not sure if i spelled it right, u use a birdie), or volleyball. Hawaii has lots of beach sports so anything like that would work well. Tiki torches would be a nice touch too but u may need to be careful since it is for jr high kids. have lots of finger foods that kids can grab a handful of and run, since they prolly will be on the go. and u don't necessarilly need hawaiian music to play. u can play music from the past school year that they liked.

Make leis (flowers) for each guest, have tiki torches, encourage people to dress in traditional Hawaiian style (grass skirts, leis, bright floral shirts, etc) play Hawaiian style music, for party favors...make a craft project from seashells or fill large shells with mints. Aside from these suggestions...tradional luau food is the only other thing I can think of

GAMES! Unless you want them standing aroung acting cool and "hanging out"....
Besides the food etc. I like a game called "poop the potato"
Line up the kids, everyone has to hold the potato between their thighs. Run toward the bucket. If you have to adjust the potato, you can do it with your hands but only while stopped. Get to the bucket and release the potato. The first to get there wins. This can also be run as a relay with teams and a bucket for each team. It doesn't have to be a potato and you can rename it anything you like.

we had a "survivor" party with a luau theme as well. the games were great, kept kids busy and having fun. had prizes for the winners. also had a treasure hunt with clues at another party. buried a bag of quarters in the yard. would have thought that they were searching for a million dollars. great time.

buy a ton of grass skirts so each kid can have one to wear at the party. Make sure your cups, plates, and bowls follow the theme of your party and just play some fun music.

Find someone to teach them to dance. Find or make leis (sp?) out of artificial flowers instead of the plastic ones. The party supply stores should have tons of decorations.
