Watch for the Energy Star Ratings to see which have the best rating.
GE & Kenmore seem to have most of the top ratings.

We could eliminate 48 million tons of carbon dioxide annually if every person in the U.S. switched to a Energy Star Rated refrigerator.

We're saving right now to get an "Energy Star" refrigerator. They sell them with the Energy Star logo and those are the ones that are more energy efficient and help save the environment. The bad news is the ones I've priced seem to be at least $50 more a refrigerator at least and higher depending on how deluxe you want to go, but they will save you a few bucks on your electric bill every month, depending on how inefficient and old your last refrigerator was.

We bought a 100 year old house where the appliances range in age from 20 to 50 yo, and the refrigerator is actually one of the newer appliances at about 20 years old, but it should still help us save after a short while. I've read it will help you save an unbelievable amount on your energy bill if you have older than a 10 year old appliance and we are working on changing all of them over to Energy Star appliances, so our utility bills will hopefully be cut in half (and if not, at least I figure we will be contributing to doing our share to helping the environment!)

I agree that the Energy Star appliances do save energy and are more expensive, however, some utility companies may orrer rebates or incentives in order to you to purchase these products. For instance, where I live, Southern Ca. Edison offers a $50.00 rebate to buy an energy star appliance, and another $50.00 to pick up the old working refrigerator. Sometimes the rebates are given to the retailers as "Instant Rebates" saving the consumer the hassle of mailing in for a check.

I sympathise. I've compromised. Rooms where I have lights on most of the time like the lounge are energy savers but ones where I'm in and out frequently have the real deal, like the kitchen. Waiting for the electronic gloom to turn into something sensible you might as well light a candle. Although some of the newer 2nd generation low energy bulbs are a bit better at getting up to speed....just.

A stand-alone refrigerator and a separate stand-alone freezer is the best option. If you buy a fridge that has a freezer connected then it is a huge waste of energy. The freezer cools the fridge so much that a HEATER, yes, a heater turns on to warm up the air to the desired temp on the fridge side. What a ridiculous appliance!

I think refrigerators, like most large appliances these days, come with an energy efficiency rating. Compare some models and pick the best energy rating. In general, smaller ones use less energy. Don't get one that is bigger than you need.

Keep the back of the fridge well ventilated, and vacuum away any dust that collects. Set it at the highest safe temperature for your food and frozen goods. Don't stand there with the door open trying to decide what to have -- make those decisions before you get out the ingredients.

probably energy star. you can also save energy in your fridge by filling it up with things so it has to refrigerate less air, like put bags of ice in it or something to fill up space.
