An Italian restaurant by me (Buca Di Beppo) serves gnocchi with marinara sauce and fresh mozarella and basil. I am just curious as to what it tastes like because I would like to order it some time.

I'm Italian (native and resident), I've always loved gnocchi and I agree with cookingmaria; if you ate tasteless gnocchi, you tried poor-quality ones... It's not about how much they cost, it's about how they're done.
anyway, there also are a lot of recipes, with different kinds of sauce: from simple oil or butter to tomatoes like in pasta (gnocchi are not "pasta"), cream, pesto, ricotta, etc.
Some gnocchi are made with additional ingredients in the dough: popular are the "green ones", usually made with spinach.
Stuffed gnocchi do also exist, less popular (at least in Italy): different kind of cheese, tomatoes, etc are generally used for stuffing.

Anyway, try eating a couple of gnocchi without any kind of dressing: if they're tasty, they're done the right way!

I am Italian and have been making gnocchi since I was 10 years old.. Yes they are made with potatoes and some with other ingredients, such as ricotta cheese, spinach and even pumpkin.
Good home-made gnocchi are never just a big blog of tasteless boiled potatoes dumplings. I am sorry to hear so many of you have had such unpleasant experiences when ordering gnocchi out. Gnocchi should be very tasty.. They are made of a starch product but they should be very tasty.. Mine are.
The sauce adds the final touch, but if the gnocchi are not tasty no amount of sauce will help.
I have won best Gnocchi recipe in yahoo answers some time back.. This is mine own recipe and very easy. Check it out.. and you will see how good they are home-made.

Gnocchi is a unique style of potato, it tastes like a kind of pasty potato pasta, but really by itself is fairly bland. Gnocchi picks up the flavor of whatever it is cooked with because of it's bland starch properties of absorbing.
It can be made in a variety of styles combining more flavorful ingredients like olive oil, garlic, tomatoes etc.

I love them finished with olive oil and sun dried tomatoes.

It kind of tastes like a miniature potato dumbling with italian pasta sauce.

The gnocchi itself does not have a real flavor, the sauces makes it flavorful.

Gnocchi is made with potato and semoline. then boiled and served with various pasta sauce.
It doesn't taste like much because normally the sauce takes over ( just like with pasta)

Gnocchi (pronouced "knee-o-key") are really light puffy dumplings served with either a tomato sauce or Alfredo sauce (depending upon the region of the cook). It tastes like a very airy biscuit if it is done right.

Hope this helps.

gnocchi is similar to a potato dumpling. and if Buca de Beppo is serving it, its going to be good.

sorry, in my opinion, it's not suitable to serve gnocchi cold, or pesto sauce. best serve hot, as you don't want this type of dish to be too hard and loss it's shine and real taste. try pasta salad, mix it with tin of tuna chunk, sliced small cube of cucumber, spring onions, black olives, tomatoes or cherry tomatoes, a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper to your taste. or simply pasta in a simple tomato sauce, cooked with onions, chopped celery, 2 crashed garlic, grated 1 carrots, tin of chopped tomato, salt and pepper to you taste, add some mushrooms and basil, serve cold and.... enjoy.

You need to be hungry, because gnocchi is dumplings. Heavy dough balls. They are made with different ingredients, depending on the recipes, but they usually contain potatoes or spinach in the dough.

They are great, but they just sit in your stomach. Nice comfort food.

Are you in SF? Anyhow, gnocchi seriously have no taste. It is just a pasta. I don't quite like them cos I am seriously into tasting my food. The middle of it taste so tasteless that I really never order that anymore. I will suggest order something else and if ever your friend order gnocchi, just a taste test off them :-)
