compact fluorescent light bulbs (cfls) are longer lasting and more energy efficient because 90% of the energy used in the old, incandescent bulbs was to produce enough heat to make the wire filament glow and that burned out fairly quickly because of all that heat.

cfls use less heat to make the gas inside the bulb glow and that means less electricity and longer life.

one drawback to cfls is that they contain some mercury so they should be recycled instead of just thrown in the trash after they do burn out.

they are sold by all the major light bulb manufacturers in america.

Basta Ya is correct. CFLs are a definite improvement over incandescent bulbs. They are readily available in stores and although the initial cost is higher than a standard incandescent bulb, they last 7-10 times as long. Over the course of the life time, they can save $30-$60 per bulb, depending on the wattage, number of hours of operation and your electric rate. LEDs are even better, but the cost is still prohibitive for most people today.

CFLs are better than incandescent and LED are better than CFL. The hang up with LED is cost. For a single bulb that would replace a 60 watt incandescent bulb, it costs about 20-30 bucks.
