I am a soldier b/c I wanted to carry on my family tradition, make my family proud, prove to myself that I can do something, $$ for college, the benefits, seeing young children look at me with admiration in their eyes, seeing a Veteran nod his/her head in pride to me when passing by, the thank-you's, the question's of "Why?", & just because I love the United States...
Why did you join & become a soldier... no matter what uniform you wear.

I served my country for ten years because I wanted to. By doing so, I received some serious technical training, money for college, an Associates of Arts degree, and $45,000.00 tax free for re-enlisting in the Gulf. I got out because I didn't agree with the direction the military was headed.

I joined the marines (but had heart complications in bootcamp. I have a rare heart condition that started or became evident in bootcamp ; my heart beats to fast when i am standing and two slow when i am sitting or lying down. The doctors just thought i was lying so i got an entry level seperation). I joined because I loved my country and I was proud of what the men and women in uniform did for our country and for protecting much of the world. I joined because I am a christian and I love the heritage and freedoms that people in this nation enjoy. Even though I have nightmares about bootcamp because the doctors thought i was lying and i thought i wa goin crazy; and will never be able to do some of the physical activities that i use to. I still love my country and do not regret joining the marines all though I wasn't able to make it my heart is each and everyday with the men and women in uniform i pray for your protection, your families and that you may come to love Jesus as your savior. I pray for my drill instructors and those that made it to you I say you are my heroes; you are what keeps me going when my medical complications get me down I think of those who have payed the ultimate price and I say thank you, I love and respect you like a brothe like a sister you are my protectors. God Bless

To become a better person; however, I sometimes wonder if this was the right answer... The military has made me a much stronger and healthier person through training, but the actual lifestyle after training can be really unhealthy and stressful. Some of the stresses and bullshit that you have to put up with, while justified in a warzone, seem really unnecessary outside of Iraq or Afghanistan. Join the army to become strong, but realize you will be mistreated and no one in charge of you will give a **** about you. And if they do, the person in charge of them will not. Its a hell of a tradeoff, being treated like an animal for x amount of years for college money and a nice touch on your resume.

I was a Airman because I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself. I wanted to travel. Benefits were not that big a deal for me. I really don't care how people look at me. I did this to serve my country that I love so dearly. I have two sisters who were Airmen and now a niece who is carrying on the tradition of wearing the blue suit. (which are much nicer now I may add) . My Uncle served during Korea, and my Dad served in WWII all Air Force or Army Air Corp.

To see the world...meet loads of interesting people...and KILL them!! ( Quote from the movie "Platoon" )

But seriously...if not you or me then WHO?

It's not for everyone but at least look into your options and then weigh up the pros and cons. 75% of the population will not even qualify for enlistment into the Armed Forces!!

It is NOT a last resort as commonly misrepresented. If you are looking for money for College then it is a perfectly viable option...serve as little a 2 years and receive buckets of money!! Not all jobs are combat related, and you get to pick the job!!

Just check out your options and then make an educated decision.

im glad you are a soldier! Thank you. My husband is also! Take care of your self! He became a soldier because he knew he would not be able to afford college or anything like that. His dad was in the military and he grew up in Germany. He wanted to travel back to Germany but so far we are stuck in Kansas at Fort Riley. He also wanted to serve his country and all of that jazz. Soldiers are the best people on earth! Thank you again

I joined the military mainly for money, but every day it becomes something more. Now whenever I hear the National Anthem or see people pledging the flag, I think to myself "That's almost a tribute and an honor to me. . ." so it's touching and rewarding. I'm not sure if I'm going to do 4 years or 20 years, but it's definitely one of the most rewarding jobs out there.

I'm a Marine because I wanted to give something back to the greatest country on the planet. After how much it has given me, it was the least I could do.
