I am Latin, and I can tell you tostones are NOT Mexican. Tostones are Hispanic. Venezuelans, Colombians, Domenicans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Panamenians, etc, cook tostones.
Be aware that tostones are not so easy to make at first. I will give you a few pointers, but still you will need a lot of patience.
These days you can find plantains in almost any grocery store. The plantains must be GREEN and unriped, they must be hard to the touch. If they are a little soft then you cannot make tostones.
I would suggest at least four plantains for your presentation, as they are delicious and dont last long.
Instructions:
First, you need to peel the tostones, when they are green they are not so easy to peel. Furthermore, the texture is unpleasant and be careful with your clothes as they will stain it badly. I usually use a potato peeler, making sure there is no skin left stuck to the plantain.
Ingredients:
11/2 Cup of oil (to fry the plantains)
3 Plantains
salt
-Once the plantains are peeled slice them around half an inch
-Heat the oil
-fry the plantains until they are light golden (both sides)
Once the plantains are fried, grab brown paper (lunch bags). Grab to pieces of brown paper. Put a slice of plantain between the two pieces of paper, with a PLATE (yes a plate). Carefully press the plantain until it is half its size (it will look like disc),
Once you have smashed all the plantains, you have to refry them in the same oil. Turn them to make sure both sizes are fried. They will fry rapididly. The color you are looking for is a bright yellow/golden.
Serve with garlic sauce/ kectchup,/tartar sauce. And add a little bit of white cheese on top.
DELICIOSO!
Enjoy it!

Tostones are a Puerto Rican dish. Other spanish countries, but not Mexico make the same thing but the go by different names, platanos fritos in dminican republic. Tostones are in Puerto Rico. & yes the 1 girl told you how to cook them correctly, but do not serve w/ ketchup, garlic sauce or tartar sauce, b/c in puerto rico they do not eat like this. sprinle salt & a little garlic powder on them when finished cooking. & make sure you buy greenish yellowish plantains, not yellow or brown.
slice in about 1 inch pieces Then fry in oil for about a minute, til soft, then smash like a pancake & fry again for about another minute, until crisp.

I don't know where you live but all the local super markets where I live sell plantains/platanos. Make sure you pick the yellow firm ones for tostones. The dark, mottled, blackish ones are overripe and are used to prepare platano maduro.
You can use the bottom of a glass jar or bottle to smush them before you refry them or you can buy a tostonera.........

Good luck.

It is common all over the Caribbean, Mexico, and some South American countries.
Plantains are carried in most supermarkets in my area (northern NJ). If not, any Mexican or Caribbean market should carry them.
