There are a lot of things they will do before they decide an endoscopy is in order. They will draw blood, probably check urine, probably want a stool sample, and do x-rays. An endoscopy is an invasive procedure and not a first resort in the medical profession. If you do have to have an endoscopy at some time in the future, they will most likely give you something that will make you go into a very deep sleep so you won't know what's going on. It's scary, but better to find out why your tummy is giving you such a hassle so they can fix it. The procedures are only done a time or two. If you don't get them done, your tummy could bother you forever and ever!

An endoscopy is a lighted tube passed into mouth or rectum. It is flexible and has a hollow interior into which a biopsy tool can be passed if the MD finds something questionable that he wants to biopsy. I have had both and while they are more embarrassing than anything else they are not painful. Perhaps uncomfortable but with medicine that is given into an IV, you don't usually remember and at the worst slightly uncomfortable. For men, it's not as bad as a rectal exam and for women, not as uncomfortable as a Pap smear.
Be sure to stress to the MD doing the exam that you expect some sort of medication. And . . . do not take no as an answer. It is your right as a patient!

I assume you are having a potentially serious problem with your esophagus or stomach? My husband had several of them over the years. They sedated him first but didn't put him all the way out. Just enough to take away most of the discomfort. Then they slide a thin tube with a tiny camera on the end down your throat and into whatever part of your upper digestive tract they want to see. They will be viewing it's progess live on screen and taking still shots of problem areas. It's a short procedure, somewhat uncomfortable, but the drugs help. Then you're done and go home.

they will give you medicine to make you really tired and almost asleep (that's sedated), then use a flexible tube with a camera on the end to see your whole esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach), the junction of your esophagus and stomach, your stomach, the junction of your stomach and small intestine, and first part of small intestine (aka duodenum). At each of these places people can have problems such as ulcers, so your doctor can see exactly what is going on. They will take pictures and if anything questionable is found, they will take a tiny piece for biopsy while down there. Good luck!

I've had two. They put you to sleep (sedation) then stick a tube w/ a camera on the end down your throat into your tummy (or up your butt, you didn't say which you were having) and take pictures to see the condition of the lining of your stomach.
The only negative is you might have a sore throat afterwards and the stuff they spray in your mouth to numb your throat is HEINOUS!!

your doctor will give you sedation for the procedure, so don't let it throw you, you won't be conscious for it. An endoscopy is a procedure where the doctor puts a tube down your throat and into your stomach and part of your small intestine to look for problems using a very small camera.

It means they stick a camera tube in one end or the other, depending on what they want to look at. Either way, it's not very comfortable unless you're sedated. If you haven't been directed to take laxatives, then chances are it's going down your throat.

Take a look here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endoscopy
Your doctor will likely check your esophagous and/or stomach/upper intestine. They can partially knock you out for the procedure so you shouldn't feel a thing. As a patient, you have a right to know, so ask any questions that are bothering you when you show up for the procedure as well.

It is a test that utilizes a little camera on a tiny wire to look inside you. Here are some resources to find out more:
