I just read in Electro-Generator Weekly that a British company is experimenting with a new form of renewable energy. What they have is huge circular tanks – like donuts – containing thousands of electric eels. The eels can only swim in one direction. Around the tanks are massive coils of copper wire. The EMF from the eels induces current to flow and thus generates power. One tank can generator enough for 5000 households.
I know we need to have renewable energy but don’t you think this is a cruel to the eels?

Well, lets see, we could stick people on stationary bikes in shifts 24/7 and that would be to the same effect. However I dont see anybody volunteering for that position (we should in the USA being the most obese country, but no, we dont). What makes us think eels want to?

Putting any animal in captivity is cruel! I hate Sea World and the Zoo. The only animals that should be kept are ones that can no longer survive in the wilderness.

Electric Eels do not produce enough electricity for that to work. They don't give a constant current so having them in a circular tank will not produce electricity and they don't usually use their shock around other eels. There is a number of other reasons why that plan would not work but there is a few.

in the event that they eels are taken care of nicely that is not extra exploitative than racing horses, mice for experimentation etc. individually i come across this actual article puzzling to believe. Getting eels to swim in only one course would be extremely tricky (and easily would desire to additionally be merciless in the event that they labored out the thank you to do it) and that i can't think of they'd produce that plenty EMF.
