You see a big truck with his signal lamp on. He's trying to get in the left lane because a trooper has someone pulled over on the shoulder. Do you use your hi beams to indicate to him it's ok to come over, or turn your lights completely off and on again, or do you do nothing and try to beat past him/her so you don't get stuck behind him? Or is there something else you may or may not do? The answers to this question will be used in a study I'm doing for a trucking magazine.

Wow! Ya'll have some great feedback so far! As far as in the UK? I don't know what the laws are. I was referring to the possible situation in the US. So far I appreciate your answers no matter what they are. I too, am an Owner Operator. Have been since retiring the US Army. I'll post what my opinion is after this poll closes. It may be monday before I can. I'm currently on the road and have to stop at Flying J truck stops to get on the internet for now. Thanks again much!

hi Jen. I even have considered the cavalier headlight situation quite a few cases. My shop is in a interior of sight the place street salt and corrosion are a controversy inflicting wires to pass open circuit. What I even have chanced on is the floor circuit on the headlights the place the wiring that runs alongside the radiator help will corrode. First verify there is +12 volts grant to the headlights. If there is then you fairly will would desire to open the wiring harness to music the floor circuit. you will probably locate it the place there are 2 wires spliced at the same time. each and every so often you will see a easy green powder on the section the place it fairly is open circuit poking out from below the splice tape. stable success looking it down.

to the poster of this question check my profile. you may find it interesting for an aticle
as to the question here is how we as drivers feel.
I have been a proffesinal truck driver for 17 years. I will tell you this IT BUGS THE perverbial OUT OF ME when people flash there high beams at night not only is it irritating but it causes a breif period of blindness (GREAT A BLIND truck DRIVER not to mention he is pulling 80,000 Lbs and in some states 105,500Lbs) I will tell you from experiance there is not a cop in this country that will write you a ticket for flashing your head lights OFF then ON to let a big truck over.
additional info
If you know that a lane is closing or a truck driver needs moving over because of a break down or emergency activity just let him over you won't save any time by trying to race past him infact you propbaly can't see what is happening ahead and by speeding up you could be puting your self into a fatal situation. mabey your in the right (DEAD RIGHT)
WE ARE Bigger PLEASE RESPECT US and the challenge we have out here. remember at 55mph you 4wheelers can stop in about 150 feet it takes a fully loaded semi up to 500 feet to stop more if its icy or the road is wet
WE NEED ROOM TO MANUVER
ask your self this question are you in that much of a hurry to get to the Latte Stand and to risk your life to save mabey at best a fraction of a second.
Final comment then some links to safely drive around big trucks.
I respect every one of you in 4 wheelers I give you pleanty of room in front I don't tailgate I allow you to have a safe journy in your travels if we all work together out here on the highways we can make this a safe place for me to work and get home to my family after 4 weeks on the road and it will be a safe place for you to travel to get home to your family every night and sleep in the bed that a trucker brought to you we have a lot of demands sitting up here in the cab of this truck and the last thing we want is to have an accident.

At night, I flash the HIGH beams to let the driver know he is clear to come over. In the day time I flash the HIGH beams again. I never try to beat the truck out. The truck will get over just as soon as he can, so give the driver a break, he'll treat you right.

I go on past them or slow down to let them into the left hand lane bcause its obvious that theyre gonna get over and big trucks will move back into the right hand lane if they can. Blicking lights are used as a warning i thought.

high beams or flashin your lights on an off, are a signal that its ok to come over. best let him over, cause if that dumb-@ss trooper half out in the slow lane, youll get pushed into the center divider. hes gonna get back over as soon as he passes anyway.....

Flash the main beams up, or flash the lights on and off.
Never turn the lights off in the dark because a) it's illegal, b) the rear lights go off too, c) you lose visability and d) the lorry driver can't see you when your lights aren't on.
I'm not a lorry driver, but I often drive with large box trailers in England. If someone has flashed me into a lane, I thank them by twiddleing the indicators, not by tapping the brakes (illegal in UK).
