They use 2/3 less energy than standard incandescent light bulbs, and last up to 10 times longer. Replacing a 60-watt incandescent with a 13-watt CFL can save you at least $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb. Second, CFLs offer convenience, because they last longer, and come in different sizes and shapes to fit almost any fixture. In addition, CFLs produce about 70% less heat than standard incandescent bulbs, so they're safer to operate and can help cut energy costs associated with home cooling.

They only save the environment, not your money. The energy saving light bulbs cost much more than incandescent light bulbs. Yes, they last much longer, but because they last so long, the money you save over the life of the bulb, is not seen as a savings on your electric bill. (Believe me, I've tried to find the savings!)
The energy saving bulbs emit much less carbon than incandescents and that is the main reason they were made. If we don't do something about carbon emissions from every source, the depleting ozone will have us burning up before we know it! And by that point, it won't matter how much heat the incandescents give off.

I have changed all my lights in my 3 story Victorian house to the energy saving light bulbs a few years back other then the intial output of money which you can save more money by buying in bulk quantities.I have reduced my energy spending by roughly 2/3, not only changing light bulbs but also changing the the ways you use them as well, turning off light when leaving rooms and so on.

They require replacement less often. This may offer a savings in treatment of household falls during replacement or from stumbling in the dark when the bulb's out, not a "light bill" savings per se unless you hiring someone to do bulb replacements.
They don't consume as much energy/lumen when turned on. This can save on the "light bill".
They don't produce as much heat. This can help reduce a/c cost in warmer weather.
I specifically have *one* incandescent light for close use in crafting ... it gives me light and warms my hands with minimal impact on the rest of the room. Otherwise, with all of the other bulbs "energy savers", I'd need to keep the room temperature higher in winter , which would affect the gas bill, rather than the electric.

My husband and I have only a few old style bulbs left, and these are mostly in areas where the CFL bulbs don't fit. Our electric bill in May 2003 was $62. This month it is $23. Our apartment is ALL electric, heat, cooking, refrigeration, AC & water heating... all on electric. Our habits certainly haven't changed, but a change in light bulbs saves us about $40 a month.

Absolutely 0%. I'll assume that you're talking about global warming for a minute here. If it is such a gigantic, worldwide catastrophe, then how the heck is switching out our lightbulbs going to do anything? Light bulbs don't save the environment. In fact, THE ENVIRONMENT DOESN'T NEED SAVING!!
On the topic of light bills, the actual flourescent bulbs are much more expensive, but have a longer life span.

Energy saving light bulbs use less electricity to get the same wattage as regular bulbs thus saving our energy consumption. They work great and last 4 times longer so it saves you money also.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR, we would save enough energy to light more than 2.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars.

About $150.00 a month in my electric bill!!! I changed all the bulbs in my house to "energy savers", and the difference was immediate, drastic, and well worth the initial cost of the new bulbs.
