I prefer the appetizers. Crab cakes, shrimp dip (cream cheese & cocktail sauce), artichoke dip, dill dip with rye bread, bacon-wrapped cocktail sausages, pigs-in-blankets, mini quiches, vegetables with dip, fruit with dip, even the frozen combo packs you buy in Sam's Club. Just anything you can dip and eat with your fingers. I just think they're more fun than a sit-down dinner.

Depends on the event. If its a party with a lot of people, then I would say appetizers. That way everyone would be able to find something they like and you can walk around and mingle with everyone else. If it's a small group or a few close friends, I would say a 5 course meal because you already know everyone and most likely will know what there tastes are. Some favorite appetizers:
artichoke/ spinach dip
cheese and fruit platter
bruschetta
veggies and dip
crab rangoons
Rumaki
chicken wings
wrapped sandwiches
chips with salsa and guacamole
artichoke fritters
potato skins

I'd prefer tons of appetizers. It doesn't even matter what kind. If there are enough of them, I'll find enough to make me full! And I can't eat a 5 course meal, I'd barely make it through course 2!

I prefer appetizers and great drinks, that way the host of the party has more time to socialize with the guests. That is what parties are about, not slaving away in the kitchen!
Great appetizers - filled wontons, chix wings with light sauce (no dripping!) filled mushroom caps, shrimp cocktail, topped mini toasts, filled tortilla rolls sliced into individual bites, dips cheese and crackers
great drinks - pre-made margarita's, cosmopolitans, variety of micro brews, .....

i prefer both so i usually end up having a buffet style party because i can never make up my mind...so there goes the meal plus the appetizers all in one....
=fruit bowls (mix of what ever is in season)
=vegetable platters (ranch dip and blue cheese)
=cheese balls ( smoked, cheddar, and about two or three more)
=drummettes ( fried and hot wing style)
=meat tray of what ever types of sliced meats
=mixed green leaf salad
=pasta salad
=chips and salsa
=green beans
=macaroni and cheese
=spaghetti
=brisket, or beef or lamb some type of main meat
=soup
=type of rice
depends on what type of party you are having and the theme of it all then you will know what to make and then you can go to allrecipes.com for some great recipe ideas
HAVE FUN GOOD LUCK

depends on how many people you will be catering to. 2-4 sit down would be the best. 5-10 appetizers for sure, you can try swedish meatballs, veggie tray, bagel bites are cool too, oh & I can't forget stuffed mushroom's.

To me it all depends on what set of friends are there.I love both sit down and appetizers with drinks. We sip margaritas. So we have salsa and dip,dry salami wrapped around a gherkin(cream cheese spreaded first),guacamole, pretzel sticks with cheese, shrimp, olives or tomatoes on them.A sit down for us is only 3 courses.Salad,--steaks,baked potatoes, sweet peas,rolls,--then chocolate mousse...Lite dessert for a heavy meal....
