Most of the STDs a person hears about or reads about are pretty common.
These can include: HIV/AIDS, herpes, HPV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis, pubic lice (crabs) and trichomoniasis.
Some other STDs that are not talked about as much and don't receive much attention are: chancroid, donovanosis, molluscum, PID, and scabies.
There are also other diseases and infections that can be spread by sex or sexual contact but usually aren't considered STDs because they can be spread other ways too. These can include: BV (bacterial vaginosis), yeast infections, UTI (urinary tract infection), and CMV (cytomegalovirus).
I've read that anywhere from 20 - 50 STDs exist.
