Primative camping and hiking to your camp area -Everything would need to fit into a backpack: sleeping bag, ground cloth, tent, water, food, cooking gear, hat, shoes, pillow, first aid kit, back pack, compass, toiletries, sunscreen, lightweight stove, trail mix, cloths for being comfortable a couple pairs of socks You want to keep feet dry of hiking , collasping tripod chair, rope, whistle of going in back country camp and hike so someone can find you if you get lost, small mirror, dehyradated food, water filtration system.
If not against sleeping under stars like I am then no tent.
If not against camping naked forget a lot of cloths
If camping at basic site :
same as above except whistle, tripod chair, water filtration system, dehydrated food, compass
basic sites usually have table and a fire ring, but bring a propane stove, propane bottle to cook on or charcoal grill like a smokey joe if you want to cook your food efficiently.
alcohol if a drinker.

depends on whether you be tenting, Rv's, Koa, backpack or roughing it.
two waterproof tarps-one under you one over you for sleeping.
rope to hang tarps over you using trees or stakes or poles
water a gallon per day per person lest you get dehydrated and dry up and blow away.
a means to make a fire and a candle to light your way.
bug netting to let you sleep without them crawling down your nose Go purchase The Boy Scout Field Book and read the camping section. This covers the basics

I LOVE camping! Let's see...don't forget bottled water, hand sanitizer, first aid kit, sunscreen, shades, cap or hat, extra clothes, easy snack foods (like fruit/veggies, snack crackers, nuts), a good book or magazine to catch up on reading and any games or toys like frisbee or horse shoes that you may enjoy. Be careful and have a good time!

Basics: pillow, sleeping bag, sleep mat, tent. Extras: flipflops to wear inside tent so we didn't track in sand or dirt, in summer in TX we'd bring a sheet and sleep on top of our sleeping bags, games to play in the evening, radio or cd player, dining fly to extend the covered area of the pad where the table was. (Obviously, we weren't backpacking)
