Because people like to eat shark's fin... (shark fin soup)

shark fins are a delicacy. Shark fin soup anyone? The bad part is that many fishers just want the fins, so they catch the sharks, cut the fins off and throw the rest back. It is an awful waste. They do this so they can catch more sharks and bring home a higher pay load of fins. You have to kill something like 200 tons of shark to get a ton of product this way. You see how it can endanger anything. Imagine if we only ate the tail of cows. How many would we have to raise to use them as a food source?

It is true that many times sharks are hunted down and killed as revenge for an attack, but this hasn't been so common as to contribute largely to extinction.

Fishing is the main problem. Sharks are a nuisance to fisherman, who often kill or dispose of them. The Chinese cherish shark-fin soup as a potent medicine and delicacy and cut off the fins. The rest of the meat is not really worth much and is very prone to spoilage.

It is not just the Chinese, however. FIshermen all over the world do this. They don't really want to get near sharks, and it is easier to stab them, take the worthwhile parts, and dump it back in. It seems heartless, but when you job is hauling smelly fish in all day, they kind of lose their charming personalities after a while.

There was a video out there of the Japanese killing dolphins, not sharks. A poster below blamed shark extinction on the Japanese, and this is not true. The Chinese consumers are more responsible for this recently, but Chinese fishermen are not the only ones out there killing sharks. And since then, that area of Japan has become a dolphin sanctuary. The actual captain of the boat in the video now gives dolphin tours and active in promoting tourism to his prefecture, where they have converted from certain bad fishing practices to more sustainable habits.

It will take time to turn around the incorrect impressions people have. More and more people are aware of the fact that shark fins are so high in Mercury that they are dangerous to eat and are certainly not a beneficial health food. But the Chinese still think of them like we think of Thanksgiving Turkey.

Sharks have always been viewed as a threat to you humans. If someone is attacked by a shark, that community wants "revenge" and the shark is hunted and destroyed. Then there is "sport" fishing for sharks that takes quite a few thousand each year and then there is the Japanese that catch thousands, cut off their fins and throw the rest of it back in the water to die.

Since more are being killed than are born, their numbers dwindle and eventually they get put on the endangered species list... just like a ton of other creatures you humans exploit!

People used to hunt sharks because of the dangers they caused to people. Some would even do it because they wanted their teeth.

if you're like that idiot that said something about democrats im sure he'll blame it on something stupid, the fact of the matter is that fishing nets that are laid down tangle them up, people who are afraid of them, kill them and fishermen kill them for thier shark fin soup... there are many, many reasons... unfortunatly you can blame mankind for basically everyone of them.

because people swim in their habitats( the beaches) and if they happen to be swimming along while their hunting we get mistaken for fish If they are found later they are sometimes killed. another reason would be fishing, pollution, and gill nets.

Fishing nets, poachers (for their fins) and pollution.
