Jellybeanchick hit it on the head with the Sierra Butte area. Sardine Lake is a very nice place to stay because there are three lakes in very close proximity (1 mile) from each other, Upper Sardine Lake (really secluded), then Lower Sardine Lake, which is fed by a water fall from Upper Sardine, then Sand Pond, which a smaller lake more like a swimming whole that has shallow troughs with benches for BBQ and to relax, and there is also the beaver damn walk, which was built by Boy Scouts that runs through Sand Pond and leads you to the Sardine Camp Grounds. There are a ton of camping places near that area that are very nice to stay at. Just down the road from there is Burger Creek, which is where I'll be that weekend. It's very shaded and has some great camping spots with a small creek that trickles through the side of the camp grounds, great for the kids and for a soothing sound at night. If you looking for a day activity, you can drive up to the Sierra Butte and hike the Look Out Trail, which takes you all the way to the top of the Butte where the old Fire Look Out is located, or you can visit any of the amazing lakes in the area. I suggest Packer Lake, it's a log cabin village type camp with a nice lake that has some good fishing and a nice lodge that you can stop for a bite to eat or a drink with Bill McQuady (the owner), tell him the Contreras' sent you we've been going there since before he owned the place which is nearly 50 years now (grandparents and I that is). You can also drive into Greagle which is the largest town in the area where there is a swimming whole, a golf course, a put-put for the kiddies, and a general store. It's a can't miss. Good luck!

Bass Lake- 1/2 an hour southwest of Yosemite(Good for a day trip). Bass Lake has boat and jet ski rentals. Lots of people, especially for 4th of July, but all the campgrounds are going to be packed, no matter where you go. So, all the campgrounds are going to be taken at the lake. But, at the northern end of the lake, there is a road called Beshore. The road is out of the pines resort area. Go ahead and mapquest it. There's good hicking in the area. The Lewis and Clark trail is nearby. There's fireworks over the lake at night on 4th of July. There fired near the Pines Resort area so be prepared to find a spot to watch at least a few hours in advance. There's a cool place to buy an ice cream or a burger near Wishon point(southern end of lake, opposite side of The Pines Resort.
Oh ya, "The Great Outdoors" starring John Candy and Dan Akroyd was fillmed at the lake.
Ok, my family and I have been doing Bass Lake for 4th of July for almost a decade. I hope you pick Bass.
Take care.

I went to the Gold Lakes area, which is north of 80 in the Sierra. There are several first come first served campsites there, and the one we stayed at was Sardine Lake. It is a very peaceful area, with lots of fir trees and grassy meadows, along with some gorgeous lakes under the Sierra Butte mountains. And I think almost anywhere in the Sierra will be well shaded and secluded, which is what I prefer too.

Check each national forest web site for general ideas. Stop in at the ranger station and ask locally.
