About my mom: she used to be a piano teacher, she and dad are active in church life; she played the piano/organ at various churches throughout her life. As a youth, she played popular tunes on the organ at the roller skating rink! She still has some of the old sheet music. Immediate family includes 5 grown children and their spouses and 14 grandchildren. She can be loads of fun, and has worked so hard taking care of others all her life. We just want this to be really special. Could just rent a room at one of their fav restaurants and have a giant cake in shape of "7", but that seems so obvious. We are trying to think of something really different. Alcohol will not feature at all as both mom and dad are teetotallers. I know 7 is considered a lucky number and they certainly have been fortunate.... they would say it wasn't LUCK, but GOOD, CLEAN livin' and trusting in the Lord. Any birthday party suggestions welcome..

Here is a link to a site that tells you all about the number 7 and how it is significant in areas such as math, chemestry , music, sports, games, tv etc... Hope it helps with ideas.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven
This one is pretty good too
http://www.sevenmagazine.org/

Try serving her seven most favorite foods. Maybe all of her gifts could have seven in them. $77 gift cards, Seven manicures, a seventy minute massage. Seven good books. Seven great DVDs. or the 1997 film Seven Years in Tibet,
A seven day vacation on Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman. (all depending on your budget). Of course seven up will need to be one of the beverages served.

Perhaps a party theme around the japanese seven lucky gods. Each gift can be a representation of the god. (example: DAIKOKUTEN The patron deity of farmers, give a gift certificate for a dinner)

Or a Snow White and Seven Dwarfs themed party. (everybody loves Disney)
Good luck

I like some of the suggestions that you've already been given, including 7Up and notifying the media.

It may not be at all your mom's thing, but perhaps 7Up (well, its parent company) would be willing to sponsor a party? After all, they are in the middle of a new advertising campaign, for their natural flavors. If "GOOD, CLEAN livin'" doesn't count as natural, I'm not sure what does.

You also mentioned the piano. I bet that means there should be a piano (and player!) at the party. What kind of music do your parents like? What did they listen to when they were first dating? Any chance of bringing in a live (and not too loud) band?

Anyway, I'd guess that the most important things are:
The guests
The food
The chance to talk with the guests
A comfortable atmosphere.

So, I wouldn't worry too much about making the party "really special". Just make sure that the guests are notified in advance (so that most of them can come), the food is edible, the music isn't too loud, and the seating is comfortable.

If your parents have the stamina, and there will be lots of out of town guests, you might also want to do something like many weddings do: throw a few parties over the course of a weekend. A dinner with dancing, a picnic, a brunch, a sightseeing tour, a more intimate dinner, are all popular with the gettin' hitched crowd. Of course, you wouldn't want to do all of those things, but, your parents might enjoy a few chances to interact with friends and family.

I completely understand the choice to not drink. Sadly, many people do not. Make sure that potential guests know that it will be a dry party. Some people may choose not to attend, but good riddence. There's no truth to the idea that a party isn't a party with alcohol.

Congratulations to your mother!

Have an array of eleven candles shaped as Number 7 put in a circular order around a nice cake big enough for the large family. More than anything else, have the venerable lady tell the kids some things about her childhood and yours.

Convey my salutes to the great people.

Write your mom a poem or a letter telling her what a great mother she is. Recall times in the past when she has truly been there for you. Even if you only write down a short poem or letter, it will mean the world to her because it will be in your own words. Get some balloons, too, and after you blow them up, rub them on your hair so they will be full of static; then stick them to the walls all around the party area. You're a good kid for doing this. Good luck!

I'm sure she would just love to have ALL her children together to celebrate this special day. Now that means children, spouses, grandchildren, spouses and great grand children (if any). What an awesome tribute to her with ALL of you there. Might notify the local newpaper and have a picture celebrating her 77 on 07/07/07 - :) WOW! Each of her children could write a short story about her and read it out loud with the original going to her.

Just love her and spend time with her, she is so precious and you are ALL so blessed to have her. God has Blessed you so very much. Wish I were there to (HUG) her. God knew what He was doing.

All of those sevens! It is lucky. I would still rent a room at their favorite restaurant, so you can all join in the festivities and no one has to worry about the cooking and cleanup. I think they would enjoy that more than anything. Invite special friends or relatives that she rarely gets to see and suprise her with them waiting for her at the restaurant. You sound like a very close and loving family, that in itself is a true testament to what a great mom you have! :o)

Hello, An idea would be to make sure you invite your immediate family and friends. Take her to a nice restraunt and maybe request a pianist or organist to play her favorite songs. Maybe put together a scrapbook or a slideshow for her of the past family fun times.

How about a 007 party - you all dress up as characters from James Bond (or wear black tie) and have a roulette table or something similar. Serve martini on the rocks, (shaken not stirred)
