a BBQ sounds great!
Hamburgers and hot dogs. maybe some bbq chicken or shrimp. (I have a great grilled shrimp scampi recipe. Let me know if you would like it.)
baked beans
Potato salad, pasta salad, coleslaw
corn on the cob
Fresh fruit (melons etc.)
pound cake and fresh berries
iced tea, lemonade
almost everything can be prepared ahead (except the meat).
Good luck. I am sure it will be a blast!

50 people is a lot of food so you want it simple and easy to prepare ahead of time. I know because I have done for 50plus in the past.

I would suggest platters of sliced meats (ham, turkey, chicken, bologa, etc) for sandwiches the people make themselves. The bread could be slided buns or just various sliced commericial sandwich bread. Have platters of sliced cheeses, at least two kinds, sliced tomatoes, and of course lettce the right size for sandwiches (do not have to be cut or broken by person making the sandwich). Then have mustard and catsup in the bottles and those commerical packages of mayo (less chance of spoilage) on baskets. Serve on ice coleslaw, baked beans (yes cold), potato salad, and macaroni salad. Oh have a dish of green and black olives for a touch. Don't forget a plate of sliced pickles. And, have big dishes of potato or other chips.

Serve various soda that are in a huge tub or cooler filled with ice, even bottled water.

Use qualify paper plates, paper napkins, disposible forks, and paper cups. They can drink the soda from can/bottle or pour it into the cups with ice from the cooler. You don't want to serve punch because some yahoo (idiot) could spike it.

You really don't need dessert except for the birthday cake, which should be a half-sheet you buy from a local bakery or CostCo/Sam's Club. For that you will need smaller paper plates, disposible forks, and a real knife to cut the cake.

And off to the side have at least three large garbage cans lined with plastic bags. When full or the party is over, you can pick things up and throw them away. And hopefully during the party guest will toss the trask in them. You can even have one marked for reclying the cans.

I would not suggest a bbq for a crowd that large because you will be spending too much time cooking and little time enjoying. Been there and done that so have had experience with that kind of party, too,.

Since it's in the summer, it's a great time for either barbaque, or hamburgers and hot dogs. It really depends on what kind of party you're going for though. If you want it to be a little classier than that, try shishkabobs, or fresh salads.

What my friends & I used to do for group parties was to host the party & serve the meat, as well as all the plates, silverware, napkins, ice & tea & pop, condiments, bread for the meat choices(buns) and when we invited people we asked them to bring a dish of their choice. It was great cuz we had all kinds of great food, and never had to worry about killing ourselves in the days before the party & the cleanup was very small as well. Works great & makes it fun & gives guests more to talk about.

Maybe a BBQ and a buffet, with like chips, veggies, fruits, nuts, etc. That is what I would do. For dessert, maybe just have cupcakes.
