Krishna(Supreme personality of Godhead) says in gita 15.7
The living entities in this conditioned world are My eternal fragmental parts. Due to conditioned life, they are struggling very hard with the six senses, which include the mind.

The misconceptions about living is that: Prior to your birth this planet was there, and after your death also this planet will be. Next is that you have an individual soul. Later it may transmigrate or suffer in other regions or enjoy. These conceptions have been created to see that society at large is not humbled. Nothing of this is true. There is only one Soul which is God in millions and millions of forms and names, which is nothing but the feeling of "I AM". From the word human being come to the meaning then to the feeling, that is true nature which is always conscious and blissful. No creation has ever happened, and there is no dissolution. The outside world is a projection of the Mind no sooner you awake after sleep. Study advaitha and upanishads.

The soul(atman) is a tiny fragment of the the supreme soul(parmatma).It is ethereal and after the death it moves up to merge with the supreme soul. The body on the other hand, is disintegrated into the five elements(panchbhoot) it is made up of. Soul needs a body. So, whenever a body is formed the soul descends and lives into it. Soul is indestructible.

Soul is the unique creation of God. It comes from him and it goes back to him at last at the end of journey of life which may extend to hundreds and thousands of births and re-births.

A human is body spirit and soul. But the soul is from spirit and body. When the body and spirit are together, you get soul.
taek em apart and all you get is body and spirit.

Human beings invented the concept of sould or spirit to explain where our emotions come from. Later it was used to ease fear of death and comfort grieving people after some one dies.
