What is the best way to scan thousands of vintage postcards cheaply and quickly, without damaging them?

I've been looking at the Kodak I1310 (roughly $1300), but am really worried about it bending/damaging the cards. I'm open to any suggestions!

You can get a flat bed scanner for a lot less than $1300 dollars. The cards would be laid flat, face down on the platen and nothing else would touch them. Go to any large computer store and see whats available - there will be lots to choose from
