why do Americans like Yorkshires so much? They are much more popular in the U.S. than other countries. Ive never seen the attraction!

i wouldnt call a yorkie a fashion accessory... they arent the prettiest dog.

I think its the long hair around the mouth that gets me - extremely dirty unless you are going to clean it every time it eats. most yorkis brought to me are dirty...ick!

The Yorkshire Terrier was introduced in the United States in 1872. The first Yorkie was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1878, making it one of the first twenty-five breeds to be approved for registration by the AKC.[6] During the late Victorian era, the Yorkshire Terrier quickly became a popular pet, and as Americans embraced Victorian customs, so too did they embrace the Yorkshire Terrier. The breed’s popularity dipped in the 1940’s, when the percentage of small breed dogs registered fell to an all-time low of 18% of total registrations. Smoky, a Yorkie and famous war dog from World War II, is credited with beginning a renewal of interest in the then obscure Yorkshire Terrier breed. Based on registrations, Yorkshire Terriers became the #2 most popular dog breed in the United States in 2006 according to the American Kennel Club, trailing only the Labrador Retriever.

Any small dog breed seems to be popular in foreign countries. When I'm on holiday I notice how many more small dogs there are than big dogs.

Our relatives had yorkies and they weren't near as nice as my dalmatian. If you got too close they would show their teeth and they would yap ALL the time. They ate poo aswell.

I prefer big dogs myself - only by personal experience.

Uh, not all Americans. I love my Akitas and always have. I have a Pomeranian as well but the Akitas are my biggest love. I think a lot of older folks like small dogs since its rather hard to have a big dog when you are 65 or older. My Akitas knock me around pretty good-it would be a lot harder at 65 than my current age. Americans simply love dogs. Thanks for asking!! DOGS RULE!!!

Because we (Americans) are superficial. Few Americans have "working" animals. With the exception of Farmers, Law Enforcement and Hunters. They are fashion accessories and are bought for amusement and abandoned when their novelty wears off.

O.K. I'm just kidding. It's because they are sooooo darn adorable!!!

They're handbag dogs that people can carry around with them - they are seen as fashion accessories I think.

Raspberryswirrrl, are you going to answer the accusations that you're not a vet, any time soon?

I am currently working as a vet and completing my Masters in Aegean Archaeology.

It just surprise me with all this you write a question like this and use the word ick...

And you wonder why people makes comments about you being a vet. I think this question just makes them wonder more.

Ironic as they're English and Americans are supposed to hate the English. (Well, Mel Gibson does anyway, but then again he hates pretty much everyone!) I can't stand any dog smaller than a cat myself, I like a dog to LOOK like a dog. Just a personal opinion, you understand. My six-month puppy already weighs 20kg!
