Years ago there was still the crappy songs, the disbelief at some of the entries yet, there was a chance we might win and a vague honestly to the proceedings.

I watched last night because my daughter as she had never seen it and my memories as a child were of excitement when the voting came but last night was just beyond belief.

I can't belive the BBC (that we fund) are giving this prime time slot with so much advertising behind it when it is no longer a competition but just a vote for the country next door.

Whatever you think of the Scootch effort it really wouldn't have made a difference , let's be honest here, nobody likes us brits anyway so we have bugger all chance of ever winning it.

If we accept everyone was voting in a biased way, let's say some shot themselves right in the foot and yes, i'm talking to you, you Turkish people.
We give you 12 points and you give nothing, we'll remember that fact when your all knocking on the door of our Immigration office.

The most stupid thing is only the top 10 songs from each year get automatic entry in to next years competition. With the rest having to qualify. But not the UK. We get automatic every year no matter what, Because we give so much money to the competition each year. It'd be funny if it wasn't our tax.

Years ago, we, the UK, used to make fun of almost all the other entries. And they were truly awful entries back then, with a few good songs. Well, at least songs that would be memorable years later, and become classics. Now it's very not at all memorable songs. I can't even recall one song. I watched it, and not one song was even memorable. Some of the stage acts were
memorable but probably for the wrong reasons, as in what the heck are they doing reaction. Some were memorable because they were funny, and they obviously were meant to be, like the Ukraine entry. Very funny. It reminded me of Dick Emery meets Divine. Lots of camp entries. Too many ridiculously over dramatic nonsense entries.
They all should vote for us, and France, and the Western European Countries, if they had some real sense.
Let's not give any funding to the Eurovision any longer. That's a start.
We can just have Terry Wogan making fun of every country anyway, while he sits watching it on TV.
Finland did do a good job of presenting though.

I agree with just about everything you say, but regarding the "I'll scratch your back" voting, all the countries have to submit their votes in secret (before they announce them publicly) so no-one knows what they're going to receive from other countries. It also stops the countries who vote later from altering their results if they feel the need to do so. Can you imagine, say, if Serbia were a few points behind the Ukraine, and the Ukraine were the last country to vote; they would be checking to see if they had awarded Serbia any points, and swiftly changing their result to make sure they didn't get anything!

I think the introduction of all these eastern block countries spells the end of the eurovision song contest. You just can't have a situation where a song is guaranteed at least 6 votes in favour regardless of how bad it is.

having said that, it was all pretty terrible wasn't it? In a way it's ' awfulness' has become self perpetuating.. no respectable artist or songwriter is going to want to be part of it. If you win.... you're crap. If you lose you're crap.

its the fault of the tv companies..making the voting for the public & making money out of the phone calls!

in the olden days, each country had a panel of 12 judges & they voted - everyone had a chance that way - but now - everyone is voting for their neighbours..so the uk will never stand a chance...however good our song is. thats sad as that was not the way the song contest was designed to be like!

Things used to be a lot funnier with the Luxembourg, Monaco, Liechstenstien, Norwegian entries, shame they dont participate or get past the semi stage.
It is a giggle though with some of the acts.

LOL, I've just emigrated to Australia from London and I saw the result of Eurovision on the internet today - I hadn't even realised it was on. So that's one HUGE advantage to living in Australia, to add to all the many others!

I've always loved Terry Wogan's sarky commentary. Apart from that, Eurovision is sickly garbage but still oddly addictive ... rather like Coca-Cola!

When it was on in the days of Katie Boyle as our English compere, Dana won for Ireland with "All Kinds of Everything"...

The judges (from each country entering), were 'supposed' to be behind locked doors, listening to the songs, so as not to be influenced by the artist(s) performing - after all it was a "Song" contest.

The lid was blown sky high, when one country (sorry, forgotten who) came to giving their points. They said on announcing the 12 points...."Goes to Ireland.....who could resist that pretty little girl sitting on the stool......." !!!!

So, back then it was a sham....and like you say, even more of one now...

Have just read that the winning singer's mum (the one who wore pebble glasses - until the final rendition lol), placed a bet for 10 thousand euros on her daughter's group....the cynic in me says that I bet that cost her a lot of phone calls!!
