I plan on taking my used laptop to Canada and give it to my little brother over there (i am US citizen). I'll be flying. What can I expect from customs officials and any ADVICE would be greatly appreciated

Okay, here is the scoop ... you can take with you gifts for other people, each gift not to be more than $60 in value. Is computer or LCD old enough that you can put their value around that range? Usually (but there is always the exception) there isn't much hassle if it is under $100.

Just be prepared with your answers ... they will ask you if you are bringing any gifts over, what the value of the gifts are, and may or may not ask what the actual gifts are.

If you are not taking another laptop for your own use ... I would suggest carrying the laptop in a case and taking it over as your own, as carryon, and then you just have to deal with the LCD.

If you say it is for your own personal use (being used it's more plausible) you will not have to pay taxes on it. If you claim it as a gift then you'll probably have to pay something.

"You can import gifts for friends in Canada duty- and tax-free, as long as each gift is valued at CAN$60 or less. If the gift is worth more than CAN$60, you will have to pay duty and taxes on the excess amount. You cannot claim alcoholic beverages, tobacco products or business-related material as gifts." Personally, I would not stow a laptop in checked backage, I would carry it in instead as less risk of damage. Best source for your question is TSA.gov (transportation security administration. On the two occasions I traveled by air this year, saw passengers with carryon notebooks/laptops an dit din't appear to present an issue as they got as far as being seated on the plane (wink). Check the TSA website - best source of information for air travel.

BTW - air travel directly to Canada requires a US Passport. New requirement this year.

if it;s carry on, they will make you turn it on to see if it's an actual, functioning laptop. that's the best i can do for you.

cheers.
