First of all I recycle and I don't have a garage, that's just an excuse. I recycle glass, cans, paper, card and plastics. It's easy, first step get the garage cleared out, Freecycle your unwanted things, if you haven't used it for a year then get rid of it. Recycle any metal or other junk, take the rest to the dump. It doesn't need your mom to start recycling, you can do it. But if you need her help tell her that you would appreciate the fact that she is helping reduce our effect on the planet. Tell her it may not help her, but it could help you and your children (her grandchildren) if she recycles.

Perhaps you mother needs a jump start?! Maybe if you get things set up for her, like clear a space in the garage (www.freecycle.org is a great idea if she doesn't mind parting with some things) and set up a recycling area (perhaps you can get some old garbage cans on Freecyle too!). Offer to take the cans, bottles, newspapers to the recycling center or haul it out to the curb for her (if she has curbside pickup). Then she will have no excuse and it will be as easy as throwing them away. I know this suggestion takes some effort on your part, but perhaps once she gets the hang of it, your involvement will be less. Maybe not though, Mom's ARE stubborn! :)

Ask your mum to put one day aside to go through all the stuff she doesn't use in her garage and if it's still in a usable condition, join your nearest Freecycle group and give it away for free to someone in your own community who can use it. Her garage will be tidy and you will then have room for some small boxes to house all the different materials that can be recycled ie bottles, cardboard, paper and the like.
There really is no excuse for people not to recycle. It isn't hard and when you get into the jist of it, you just end up doing it without thinking!
Good luck x

Well, clean the garage, and set up some recycling bins (old garbage cans) and label them. I seen a thing that said when you recycle even one beer bottle it saves as much energy as it takes to power a 100 watt bulb for 4 hours. Flood your mom with facts and keep at her (after you clean the garage that is) and she would see how serious you really are.

If she visited or lived by a landfill site she would realize why recycling is so important. Almost everything can be recycled, composting adds necessary nutrients to our gardens and lawns. Plastics, glass and metals take a long time to break down, thus leaving us with a large storage facility for garbage, plus taking up valuable land for humans and animals.
You may want to figure out a polite way to express to your loving Mother that she is being very selfish and archaic, once learned, recycling is actually rewarding.

Perhaps you can make it your responsibility. Get a separate garbage can or container for recycling and put it somewhere convenient to her. Have her put everything in it and then you take it upon yourself to sort the recycling and put it out on pick up days or take it to the recycling center.
Also, go to the library and look the laws in your town/state. A lot of places make it legally necessary to recycle.

Recycling is just reusing valuable recourses. Taking part in this activity will help towards living more sustainably. Ask yourself, are you part of the problem or the solution?
I find it almost impossible to get my Mother to do anything I suggest - perhaps work on a more subtle approach. Good luck!

Hi, it could be a good time to reorganise the garage,so that you do have that extra space that we all need from time to time. And you could construct a recycle point by the garage.

Just do it for her, I started changing others habits by literally following them to the trash and putting it in the recycle bin, after a while they became conscience of this and no they do this to. Don't give up!!
good luck
