If you have the materials and it's practical to use 4-gauge for your ground wiring, go ahead and do it. You'll never hurt anything by using a larger wire gauge than necessary, nor will you harm anything by using different sizes for power and ground (as long as both wires are large enough for the amplifier's current demand).

Always use the same gauge for power and ground. if you dont then it will cause one of them to run hot. So in your case i would def. use an 8 gauge. It really doesnt matter what gauge wire you have running from the battery to the block. It only matters what you have running from the battery to the amp and the ground to the amp. They should be the exact same.

if you have a 8 ga going to the amp you need a at least an 8ga going to ground.

8 guage 4 is too big
