What is this ? With all these americans asking if Greece or Turkey are safe for them? Do they live in the most safe country of the world so they get scared and insecure about their safety in other countries which happen to be touristic as well?

I've lived in Turkey for over 2 years and I'm an American, so I can accurately say that you don't really have anything to worry about. Sure, if you walked around with a big "I love George W. Bush" t-shirt, you might have some problems-- but I'm fairly certain that would be applicable anywhere!!

Turkey gets a bad rep from the press, so a lot of Americans are surprised when they see how different Turkey is from what they've seen in the news or read about in guidebooks. Istanbul is a huge city, so you need to be smart and not find yourself in bad areas flashing a lot of cash, but that's just common sense. There are a million things to see and do in Istanbul, so of course you should go! Enjoy it. It's different and amazing and you'll be fine.

What would make anyone thing that Turks or Turkey is dangerous? The touristic areas are very safe people are very friendly they will show hospitality like no other country. If you go in to a store to buy something, they will immediately order you something to drink which comes with its unique culture.I haven't experienced that anywhere else in the world and I've been around......You will be more than OK...Pay no mind to those low-lives who has never traveled anywhere.....

As an American living in Sultanahmet, Istanbul, I can vouch for the positive attitude of Turkish people in general toward Americans. Of course, the Turks tend to think that we are richer than we actually are, but that's because of how we are portrayed in TV series and in movies (who of us live like that anyway?) and because tourists are very often have a bit of extra money that allows them to travel in the first places.

Safety here is a matter of common sense, just as it is anywhere else.

There are some places that you should avoid at night, just like any place in the states. Beware of dolapdere, tepebasi, backstreets of taksim. As a general rule, stay with the crowd. Don't hesitate to call other people for help if you think there are people that pose a threat to you.Otherwise you'll be safer than most places in the states and europe. Enjoy!

haha why should you have a problem because you're American anyway? I mean not that you'll have a problem if you were from Zimbabwe. I've been to U.S for 5 years and during my time there I missed my country so much. I can assure you it's safer than U.S.

Have fun and don't worry:)

Istanbul is a huge city with a specific tourist area. Just like London or NYC it has its safe places and its unsafe places. It is known to have a human trafficing problem (girls from Ukraine and Moldova) but that stays mostly in the non-tourist parts of the city. In the main tourist areas (Taksim to Sultanahmet) pick pocketing and rip-offs are likely your biggest problem. Although I do know of people who have had a knife pulled on them, never heard of anyone getting seriously injured.

I traveled to Turkey as a stop on a Greecian Cruise last summer, they were very receptive to american travelers, and from the impression I got, they are hurting for tourism in general - so much that I believe the income they make from travelers overtakes any international unrest. Hope this was helpful!

Hi,

My Turkish Friends said, that is right.
American or French I mean also all Armenian, there is no problem.
Safety and you can see any problem.

When you came to Istanbul, I recommended to trip for Beylerbeyi, and drink tea and if you like fish, try grilled fish with watching the Bosphorus ...

Regards

Excuse me, why are we the black sheep greeks and turks in this site? Why always asking if our countries are safe/Of course they are safe, deliquency there is everywhere dear.
I can tell you one thing..
They say Naples is dangerous.I went for Christmass..I can assure you that nothing happened to me, i went also in the dangerous destricts where there is deliquency as they say, in the day time, and i havent seen something wrong.
Certainly, you dont have to provock, it means, that you dont have to go out full of gold, or with the bag opened, but be sure my friend, this is everywhere..
So, dont be anxious, and enjoy your holidays. They also say"When you leave for travel with the fera, something will happen to you''.
Personally i wish you to enjoy it, bedcause Istanbul is a great city, people very warm .Visit the monuments, and eat sultanahmet kofte, and kazandibi in Nisantasi...
