I suffer from depression. I had really bad depression when my son was born and don't want to go through it this time when my baby is born. Are there any meds my Dr. can give me that is safe?

I understand! I take Lexipro and it helped greatly.
But, if you are going to breastfeed , you should ask your doctor about a different type of medication for you.
Good Luck!

Hate to tell you this but if you want to get a prescription for depression, you will have to go thru a trial basis, not all of them work for everyone the same, and some doctors just don't believe us. See, they get a kick back on certain depression medications they can give out and prescribe to people, kinda like if you were a salesman, you wouldn't tell someone that the toaster your selling burns toast, but if they try a Westinghouse toaster they will get perfect toast every time. Same with doctors, they aren't going to perscribe a medication to you that they don't get a kick back on, even if your toast is going to get burnt, know what I mean? You may want to look into another answer, like herbal remedies, look up depression on the computer and see what's being offered, you would be surprised how many different types of possibilities there are, and you really should start looking now, don't expect a miracle as soon as your baby is born. I didn't take anything, and I did go thru post-pardom, but I got over it after 6 weeks on my first baby, a daughter, my son I sometimes think I'm still going thru it, and he's 9 now, I never did find a miracle medicine to help me, but, I go in and out, and I'm thinking the depression is from the father, not my son, as he's the one I find myself walking around the house mumbling to myself about how I hate him, not my son. So, I got rid of him, still mumbling, but now I know why, and I'll get back to myself soon. My son and daughter are the bright spots in my life, so yours may be too, maybe you need to look deeper into the reason behind your depression as well, it may really not be the babies your having.

the best natural way to avoid post partum depression is a good support system;
Family and friends who are available to spend time with you, check in on you, help with the baby, and also a good healthy diet and enough rest. Nap when the baby sleeps if you can.
Breast feeding is also good, you and the baby will form a closer bond very fast, and your hormones will not be so up and down.
Avoid pills if you can. Most new moms do not need them.
Happy mother's day

why do you have to have meds? I hate that today's society rely on pills to make their lives better. How about getting out and taking walks daily? Eat the right foods so your brain can function properly.

Why bother having kids if you can't even be well enough to be a decent mother?
