The word 'channel' is a very general term, whereas the term 'canal' is more specific when we want to make reference to watercourse or sea passage.

Comprehensively, 'channel' has many meanings such as:-
1) a passageway for liquids,
2) a strait connecting two seas,
3) the deepest part of a stream, river, sea passage or harbor,
4) a direction or course of action or thought,
5) a particular band of radio waves,
6) the way through which information travels, etc.

As you can see, the meaning of 'channel' is very broad, and when we use it to mean 'watercourse', it can mean natural watercourse as well as artificial watercourse.

On the contrary, the term 'canal' has fewer and more explicit meanings compared to 'channel'. 'Canal' means:
1) a watercourse excavated in the ground to allow ships to travel through it or to irrigate an area, or
2) a narrow passage which conveys liquids in the human or animal body.

It's therefore clear that when we use 'canal' to mean watercourse or sea passage, it actually refers only to man-made or artificial watercourse. If you like, you can think of 'canal' as being a subset of 'channel', so to speak.

A canal is a manmade cut in the earth for carrying level water and shipping. A canal may also include aquaducts (bridges) to carry the canal across valleys and tunnels to carry it through mountains.
A channel is manmade cut in a water way to provide sufficient depth for boats and barges to pass without touching bottom. The "main channel of a river" implies this need of man although the flow of the river normally keeps much of it clear.

Look up both words in a decent dictionary (one which gives the etymology of its entries.)

They have the same root and are essentially the same thing, despite (usually) being used for (apparently) different things.
