I was in the US visiting my family, when one of my "friends" calls me there from another country asking me to buy him a certain gift from the US. Well, actually, this gift is hard to find where I am from, so I went out of my way to get it for him. My father paid for this gift, and my "friend" told me he would pay me back. This was 6 months ago. The other day, he tries to scheme his way out of paying...by saying, it is a gift, it's not nice to ask for money back for a gift you bought for someone!! What should I do? It wasn't a gift, and he said he would pay me back...How should I approach him about this?

The same way you are writing about it. You approach him and kindly remind him of his request to pay you back once you obtained the object for him. Let him know that it was not an easy request to fulfill as of the time and expense you spent to obtain it for him. That had you have known he was not really a friend and a man of his word you would not have bothered to try to fulfill his wish. As you dont state what country you are from it is hard to know if you could got to the village chief, his employer, parents or someone who is in charge or over authority of him. If you dont want to use legal means to obtain the funds and he still does not pay up, just count it to experience and know that you are not taking such requests unless money is by "express" sent to you before you leave, in order to purchase such items.

He isnt much of a friend and I would either demand he pay it back or tell him the friendship is over. And consider it a cheap price to learn the true character of your so called friend. He could have taken you for more. My profile says a favor will kill you faster than a bullet. You got a taste of what Im talking about.

Your "friend" is not a friend. If it was a minimal amount of money, and you already told him that it was not a gift but he requested that you purchase it for him, and he would reimburse you for it then I would just drop the whole issue, and drop him as a "friend" too.

If it is a large sum, then I would let my father handle it.

Good luck.

Id just make it a good excuse to end the friendship are you going to let yourself be used financially and emotionally , he is getting dominance gains emotionally to you know . Which is probably his main pay off

BE STRAIGHT WITH HIM. SAY I'M SORRY , BUT YOU CALLED ME , ASKING TO BRING YOU THIS ; I DID , AND HAVE TO PAY BACK MY DAD WHO PAID FOR IT. ALSO TELL HIM YOU WILL ACCEPT THE PAYMENT IN FOUR INSTALLMENTS ; ONE EACH MONTH ; NOT BEING NICE FOR ASKING TO PAY ? SAY , ' SORRY , I'M NOT A NICE PERSON. SMILE AND SAY ' SO, WHEN WILL YOU START PAYING ME ?' DO HAVE PEOPLE AROUND YOU WHEN THIS HAPPENS. GOOD LUCK.
