Curious.
I got W98...not the second edition...W98!!
And it is slowly dying before my very eyes.

Slow shutdown.
w98 startup has always seemed a little slow
illegal operation messages.
fatal exceptions....even while running a McAfee scan in safe mode.
starting to get on my nerves.

MOZILLA browser seems balkier.

I think W98 is done.
slowly going KAPOOT.

ANYBODY ELSE with W98 experiencing same?

Time for new OS.
Or go to RE-PC here in Seattle...
http://www.repc.com/seattle.html
and spend a between 200-300 bucks for used computer.

No, I have Windows XP. I do not EVEN want to get Windows Vista. In defense of Windows 98, it wasn't half bad, at least I could work with it and fix things if something went wrong. The nice thing about XP (usually), is that it has error routines that keep it from just locking up and having to re-boot.

The main difference between '98 and XP is that the disk format system is different. '98 uses FAT; XP uses NTFS. The two are not compatible. You will find that if you do change to XP, your hard disk will have to be reformatted for the new disk structure. NTFS is much faster though as far as reading and writing to your hard drive goes. You might as well upgrade, because any new Windows software will not run on Win '98.

Do you still have the Windows 98 Second edition with you? If yes, would you like to format your hard drive and install the software again?

But I strongly suggest that you buy a new computer with windows vista home edition or the home premium edition or windows xp sp2. There are a lot of companies that sell computers at a lower price or in installment basis. Acer, Apple, Asus, Compaq, Dell, HP, Sony, Toshiba, etc.........

Currently, Windows Vista is doing a fix for some software compatibility issues, but windows vista is good.

Windows 98 is and has always been prone to problems, It's a very outdated operating system. Save yourself the hassle and upgrade to at lest the minimum , Windows 2000 or Windows XP home..

I do not use it but upgrade them from 98 everyday and have to tell you that 98 is ok. it must be your system in general. if you still have the disk and product key you could do a fresh install, and it would be like new. that or depending on your pc specs. I would recommend taking it to a smaller pc repair store and they should install xp pro on it for you for less than $100.00. you might try downloading adaware se and running a full system scan and getting rid of all corrupt files, also defrag, this should help drastically! good luck

I still have lots of customers using 98, and they work fine, in your case, most likely you are infected by virus/trojans, and your windows has been damaged.
Someone who knows about computers can normally fix this, but try to talk and type to you to fix it is not as easy.
May be an new base unit is best in this case
