We started off small, and traded up.. Now i have this beautiful ring.. I love it.. It's not about the size, but it's nice looking down and seeing this beautiful rock on my hand. It's a symbol of our love..

forget 3 months salary! Whatever you can pay off before the wedding! After all, if you pay it off after the wedding, you are really spending her money too, right? My husband spent less than $1500 for engagement ring and band. I love my ring and got to help pick it out. The wedding is usually very expensive so the less debt you both have, the better. We were able to buy our first home together just before getting married.

This totally depends upon your own personal finances. Choose something you think she might like, without going into debt, spend what you can comfortably afford. You are able to get a set for a few hundred dollars, or the sky's the limit - wherever you fit in the continuum.

Set a price range, like $2000. for a engagement ring or whatever fits your budget...
Then take her to buy the wedding rings and again set a price range...
You should spend what won't have you eating Kraft Dinner for the next 10 yrs...

I think the "rule" is something around 3 months salary. So whatever you make in 3 months is what you should spend.

However, I think that's pretty ridiculous. My fiancee spent 1000 dollars on mine, and I have a heck of a diamond. I adore it!

But, it's whatever doesn't put you into debt and makes the lady happy.

I spent $700. Not the cheapest set, definitely not the most expensive set. And, for the record, nowhere near three months of my salary.

What matters to my wife, mostly, is that she knows how much time and effort went into finding "just the right thing."

Well you should buy an exspensive one. But the smart way. You go on the internet to like google and type in wholesale wedding.engagement sets. So you buy an exspensive ring just at a lower price then you would pay at a store.

It all depens on what you want, traditionally it used to be 1/2 of a years sallary, but that doesnt happen much anymore.

Dont go into debt over it, its not worth it, you can find beautiful ring sets that you can actually afford, and the meaning is the exact same.

my first one was $500 (1985) & my second $5000 (1998) - yes, I "traded up", but it was the man & not the ring that mattered - it's what you two can afford & not the size of the rock. Also consider that some jewelers do offer a "trade up"policy that would let you upgarde her to a bigger diamond for a 5th or 10th anniversary.

Depends on what you think her likes are, and what you can afford. Now if a woman basically demands an expensive set, you should think twice about this relationship.
