It is often good to start with questions. I would start by asking him is he a happy person. Does he enjoy his life. This will actually bring him in more tune to how he might be around you, which is your goal.

is there another adult you can talk to about this ?
go talk to the school counselor to get soem good tips and that way you always have someone to go to.
Try telling your dad you need to set a time to sit down and talk with him.
Tell him you need him to be there for you but you feel he is defeinsive and grouchy.
Ask to do an activity with him or have him tell you about his childhood.
best of luck.

Just try to be nice and then leave him alone. Some dads are just plain grouchy from too much work.

Say this: "Dad, one of my friends has trouble talking with his Dad cuz his Dad can be such a grouch and my buddy is afraid to say anything. I was wondering if you have any ideas as to how he and his Dad can communicate better?"

He's probably tired and stressed.
Try to do some of the things that he has to do around the home.
Take some of the load off his shoulders.
That will at least tell him you're on his side and he could probably use the help.

Dad's have alot of things on their minds and are saddled with alot of responsibilities. Give him a hug, ask if he's O.K. and offer to do something special for him. Good luck :-)

Try not actually saying anything to him. Just help him out with stuff, chores and stuff. Maybe he'll notice you effort and it will put him in a better mood.
