and why do guys have preference over more ordinary girl than a more gorgeous one?

To contradict the first answer: The less popular do not go for the average girl because they are desperate (I assume you are in junior high if you really believe that). I prefer the girl next door because she is real. I don't want a girl that looks like she came out of a magazine article. I want one that looks approachable, friendly, caring, etc. Inner beauty and the way that you feel inside really does show on the surface and as long as you are projecting beauty and sexiness, then you will be beautiful and sexy no matter what size, shape, color, you are.

Gorgeous girls get a lot of attention and therefore have numerous guys going after them at once. Competition for a hot girl can get messy and costly.
An ordinary girl has fewer suitors and your chances increase tremendously. Plus ordinary girls are usually more down to earth.
