DUH!
Most animals do not like loud noises, be they thunder, or firecrackers, noisy children, or loud rock music. That's one reason why people are asked to be sure and confine their animals during holiday celebrations, such as the Fourth of July, so that the animals won't panic and bolt away from home and become lost.
Remember, their hearing is so much more acute and sensitive than ours. They can hear not only what we hear, but other sound levels too that are both above and below our capabilities. That's why a cat can hear a mouse scratching in the wall. And that's why there are dog whistles that one can blow on that make no noise - at least to our ears - but that the dog can hear.

Cats like to feel secure and sure of their surroundings at all times. If the cat isn't used to that kind of music he was probably completely taken by surprise. To him that could be some kind of monster or predator trying to get him, he doesn't know where the noise is coming from or what it is. I've never known a cat to like really loud noises and some of them will give you a nasty scratch if they are startled by it. He was keeping his eyes open and looking around because he was probably trying to find the source of the noise and see if it was safe. Try not to have him in a loud room if you can avoid it, but whenever you see him scared like that talk in a gentle soothing voice to him and pet him calmly. Your animal looks to you for cues as to how he should react to things. If you are calm and reassuring, it will make him feel better too. Hope this helps!

There's some funky scent for sure ... maybe you're bringing it in on your shoes. Possibly catnip ... do you or anyone in your family walk through wild meadows? Could also be the scent of another cat, very probably female and in heat ....but he seems too young to be interested ... but hell, what can I say? Look at human teenagers these days ... evolution. I prefer the catnip explanation somehow ... it doesn't even have to be catnip - there are lots of herbs and plants that cats have loopy recations to; some even like the scent of mint. I wouldn't worry if I were you, he's obviously enjoying himself which is good. But yes, I would be curious to know what the cause is. Hope you find out!

Quite often loud noises and new situations are things that do disturb cats. Loud music also has a beat that they can feel through their bodies (especially when it is loud) and again this is not something that they are used to and yes, it does startle and disturb them. I would suggest that for the good of your cat and your Dads hearing, that he turn the music down.

Loud environments raise the blood pressure and pulse rate of all animals, and can lead to hearing loss. Your cat wasn't scared as much as in pain. The same pain as those who have to put up with those who are hard of hearing and insist on turning up the TV to uncomfortable volumes, or children of parents who have dulled their own hearing and don't realize what they're doing to their own children.

your cat was definitely scared AND unhappy and you were definitely being callous in making the poor kitty sit there with the loud music blaring.
