The main set of programs that run a computer. The operating system runs all the other programs by performing basic tasks, like recognizing input from the keyboard, mouse, CD/DVD or game controller, sending output to the display screen, printer, speakers, etc. It is also the traffic manager that keeps track of everything that is going on and lets each task have processing time.
For detailed definition of this and other Computer terms go to the resource listed below.

An operating system is a program, so to speak, that manages the hardware (the tangible parts of your computer: hard drive, power supply, CD drive, etc.) with the software (programs: Firefox, iTunes, Microsoft Word), input/output (e.g. keyboard, mouse, joystick, etc.), and creates an user-friendly GUI (Graphics User Interface) environment.
Examples: Microsoft's Windows series (3.1, 95, 98, ME, XP, Vista), Apple's MacOS, Unix and its derivatives.

Windows is an operating system.
Word is a word-processing program.
When you type a document in Word, Windows interprets your keystrokes and makes them follow your wishes/commands.
It is similar to your brain in that it governs every move, but dissimilar in that it cannot deviate from your commands. If you issue the wrong command, Windows will carry it out!

Yeah, the Navy and Marine Corps would stomp on them. Especially if they had to hold this fight anywhere besides the Continential US. The only way to move masses of tanks and other vehicles is by ship. We'd wipe out the airborne guys before the Air Force managed to move 1 army armored battalion.
