These are some great answers and I guess I was wrong to assume ALL men loved tans but you rarely see a freckled pale skin woman, on a magazine cover. What's with that?P.S. I am pretty content with myself, just curious bout' the whole tanned vs pale

In days of old, a fair-skinned lady meant that she was well taken care of. The royals hardly ever ventured out into the sun to spoil their complexion. The tanned women wore their labor on their skin, proving to all who looked on them that they were forced to do their own work, a sign of poverty.

Nowadays, girls who have fair skin give the (false) impression that they either do not get out much or that they require special care. Modern men seem to want companionship, and most of them prefer the outdoors. So a little tan on a woman may serve to say, "I'll go outdoors with you."

What I think your question really means is, "Why don't I feel as pretty as someone else seems?" Don't let yourself doubt yourself. Your skin is fine whatever its shade. If you are trying to appeal to the eye of a man, you are aiming high. Set your sights on his heart, dear one! The heart is the organ that makes a man stay or go.

Pierce the heart and the eye will shine! (Skin tone be hanged!)

Besides, most of us men know that a woman who tans on purpose is just too foolish to know that she is baking her skin into a short life. The beauty of a fair-skinned woman will far outlast the tanning-bed types!!

I am sure there are some men who prefer fair skin. Everyone has different opinions but darker skin tends to make a woman appear a little thinner and more healthy as long as it isnt leathery, fry yourself in the sun 24/7 type tan skin. LOL..
The only reason I say it makes someone appear more healthy is because usually if someone gets sick they tend to get a little pale. But I dont mean all pale people look unhealthy. There are some beautiful fair skinned woman out there.

society has through the years set standards for what is considered beautiful...these days 'beautiful' women are thin, tall, tanned, and look like paris hilton, and many other whores on tv.
back in the medieval ages men wanted to marry overweight fair skin women cuz that meant they had money for food and did not have to work out int he sun... so society sets these standards of men not being able to cry or be emotional, and women having to be an anorexic slut to be beautiful(o the wonderful times we live in)

if perhaps humanity could realize that beauty is seen differently by everyone then perhaps there would be a variety of definitions for 'beautiful'

i personally dont know why tanned skin is more attractive...it makes you age faster because yur skin cells are being nuked and destroyed (plus wrinkles at a younger age)...

It depends on the images we're used to - 100 years ago it was pale skin that was considered beautiful and tanned skin was considered unattractive. It's important to think for ourselves and not just swallow what we're fed by TV and celebrities.

I agree with the answers so far, but would like to add that tanned skin appears healthier.

I burn if I'm in the sun 10 minutes. :( No point going to a tanning booth. If you don't tan in the sun, you won't tan in a booth.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It also depends the on the location where the fair skin beauty lives.

Personally I would think that it is because the contrast between fair skin and the person's surroundings, including clothing appears a bit sharp. I would suggest that a fair skinned person wear clothes and makeup that is closer to their skin tone. You won't stand out as much, but at least you won't be standing out in a negative way. Just to let you know, I am married to a wonderful woman that is not much darker than fair skin, and believe me it is what is on the inside that counts, seventeen years of marriage is a pretty strong argument.

My husband loves my white @##, and wouldn't change it for the world. Gotta love him for that, even though I still wish I were tan. I'm like the first answerer, though, couldn't tan if I laid out for a month in a desert.
