I was really depressed for a long time. What helped me was to do things that made me happy before I was depressed. For me it was reconnecting with friends and family, and giving myself Chance to believe I could be happy again. Talking about what is bothering you also helps a lot.
Another really important thing I think really helps is to challenge your self with something that you have always wanted to do but never had the guts to try. It can really help you to empower your self and have a sense of control over your life.

Depression is a serotonin imbalance in your brain. Exercising helps, obviously all the other methods mentioned above as well. However, there is no over the counter treatment for depression. As bad as it is, a chemical synthetic serotonin balancer is the best way to fix this. There are some out there that have very few adverse reactions. None of this has to be long term, but you should stay under a doctors care while you are depressed. Physicians can help to monitor the drugs you are taking and wean you off of them when you do not need them anymore. Surrounding yourself with people you love and people that are supportive and understand the disease can help too. There is nothing that is a surefire quick way to fix depression, but it does get better. Hang in there and you will be fine. If you are just terrified of prescriptions, then by all means try other things. However, talk to your doctor first because most of the time they can ease your mind about the fears of a prescription, or at the very least tell you the best natural things to try. What works for some may not work for you, so you may have to try different things or a combo of things. Hope this helps you some.

The OTC like St Johns can be very dangerous. If you dont want to take medications, then counseling has proved very effective. How would I know? Worked 30 years in the field of mental health, support people taking medications, having counseling, or both.
There are many psychotropic anti-depressant medications. But you need to go see a psychiatrist for the medication who specializes in depression, a licensed psychiatrist rather than a family doctor who may not have the expertise in the latest mood elevators. And again also see a licensed psychologist, especially if you don't want to take the medications.
Oh, did you know most side effects you are reporting go away in time?

I tried St John's Wort but for me, it did nothing.
Chinese herbs did work for a while, and I felt good on them - they were the one thing that did work quite quickly. Be careful if you do down this route - make sure you get the herbs from a reputable chain that is registered with one of the governing bodies; in the UK, Herbal Inn are fairly good.
Don't take the chinese herbs if you're on anything else. And only buy the dried herbs that you take twice a day - don't let them pressure you into buying all the capsules and drinks etc!
If you don't want to take anti depressants because of the side effects, one thing you can do is take one of these medications in liquid form - Prozac and Citalopram both come in liquid. This means you can increase the dose really slowly and therefore avoid nasty side effects.

Its not an easy task. Depression is actually anger that is being internalized. Start by recognizing the triggers. Keep a journal, write in it everyday, especially when you are feeling angry. Its important to get it out of your system. Take walks, exercise, eat right. Find a hobby you enjoy and do it often. Don't drink. Alcohol just makes it worse. Talk about it. Talk to a friend, a family member or a clergy member. I have found that it does wonders for your self esteem to help other people. Practice positive thinking, its a cliche, I know but it does work. beleive it or not swimming is greattttttt help and i mean in the sea not pools!!!!!!!!
i was once to depressed to even realize that am goin downhill that fast. my family was so concerened i was too negative to even ask for help or take it when affored! but then came my birthday and kinda reminds me how long i been that way and i didnt wanna start with med or shrinks . i thought i needed to eb alone so when by the sea after summer was over an the place was kinda ll mine. talkin to the sea at first but then dippin myself into the sea made me realized how lil i am and how tiny my problmes are just seein how big the sea was and those endless horizons beuon the ski . am not being poetinc but any change in routine might help but swimmin an the way makes u tired an sleepy end of day and hungry same time these are all things that acatully connect u to time and put u back to ur life.
one more thing might help is writing ur journals. trust me when thsi is over u woudl wanna laugh readin all those crabby blues u came up with.

Everybody acts different with each medicine. Try 1 at the time. I do take B vitamins and fish oil and also magnesium for it also. I am really not sure if any of them help real fast.

Fast is not going to happen. You can exercise, meditate and try yoga in order to relieve depression naturally. Have you tried medication or are you going on other people's experiences. Talk therapy is also a great treatment for depression.

I assume you are talking about chemically induced depression. There is absolutely no evidence that the things you list will help particularly in moderate to severe depression.
