"special effects"...some people swear by "manic panic" & it is good, but it didn`t last very long when i used it, i had to touch up my hair like every other week...on the other hand, the "special effects" has lasted 2 months without a single touch up...i recommend "atomic pink", that`s the one i`m using!!!...u can buy it at hot topic or on ebay...here`s their website...

So far so good! I heard a lot about this product from stylists and salon owners. When my stylist's coloring was lackluster, I decided it was time to take matters into my own (and a good friend's) hands. I purchased Special Effects Hair Color at a local beauty store for under $10. The application was fast and not too messy...It's only been a few days, but limited fading has occurred. Also, I'm super impressed that the outcome is accurate to the bottle's promise! yay! no cover up hats needed!
Special Effects Hair Color is widely available online, limited colors at few local salons...some ultra punk colors available at Hot Topic.

First off - if your looking for a natural shade, stop reading now - this isn't for you. On the other hand if you want vibrant reds, greens, blues and the likes, step right up!
You can't but it in the country yet. It ends up costing £8 or £10 a bottle. It is more than worth it. What is it? Special Effects Dye. This stuff is the *only* one to be spending your money on. Rich, vibrant colours, and unbelievable staying power - billed as semi-permanent (exactly like Directions and the like) this doesn't turn your pillows purple, and need re-doing every time you wash your hair. Rather it can go several weeks before it starts looking faded. I worked it out to be much better value than Directions, despite the greater upfront cost because I was using less dye less frequently.
My fiancée first used the Nuclear Red maybe a year and a half ago. Deciding day-glo red was perhaps a little much for him, he went back to black (permanent black) once more. Except it wouldn't die, and he kept fading up to red! He's now found his perfect shade though, and of the four bottles I brought back from the states 4 months ago three are still in the cupboard as reserve supplies. (His hair is waist length, but he's only dying the front parts red. His whole hair would probably use a whole bottle)
Deep Purple, and their pinks and blue are also highly recommended. One friend tried to bleach out the Pink, but it resisted - pretty d**m impressive for a semi-perm, if somewhat annoying if you change your mind.
Perhaps it's the reduced frequency of dying, but it seems to be pretty gentle to hair, and as, unlike it's competitors, it can have effect over unbleached hair, that's another bonus for the longevity of your hair.
Available mail-order from various online alternative shops, this is well worth the wait.

I should say this straight away – Special Effects dyes are not for the faint-hearted! Special Effects dyes come in a wide range of gorgeous colours – various shades of pink, blue, green, purple, orange, red. Every colour in the rainbow, and more.
The one thing Special Effects dyes are known for is their staying power. As anyone who is into dying their hair unconventional colours knows, most dyes don’t last very long, and colour fading is a major problem. By the time I first tried Special Effects dye, I’d had pink hair for a few weeks and I’d tried three other brands of dye. One lasted just over 3 weeks, the other two were almost completely washed out within a fortnight. I’d wanted pink hair since I was little and, having finally plucked up the courage to go for it (and got permission from my boss), I was frustrated at how quickly the colour faded.
Then I heard about Special Effects. The most commonly-held view about the brand seemed to be that it lasted much longer than other brands. I was desperate to try some, but my hopes were quickly dashed – Special Effects is an American brand, and it proved impossible to get hold of the dye in the UK. I was reluctant to order some in from the USA, so resigned myself to being stuck with quick-fading brands of dye.
I’d been buying my hair dye online – from www.haircrazy.com - as local shops here don’t stock them, and one day I was thrilled to discover that they had started stocking Special Effects, making them the only retailer outside of North America to do so. I immediately ordered a bottle of Atomic Pink, which arrived the very next day.
Like all unconventional coloured dyes, you have to dye over bleached hair to get the full effect; if your hair's darker, it'll just give a tint to it. I would advise if you’re going to use this dye that you don’t wear pale coloured clothing for the first couple of weeks, unless your hair is very short. I found that it stained the neckline of tops and jackets. Oh, and pillowcases too. The staining does wash out easily, but it can be quite noticeable.
And my Atomic Pink colour lasted ages. Yes, it faded in the first couple of weeks (even staining my fingernails the first few times I washed my hair), but once the initial fading was over it settled down to a gorgeous deep, bright shade of pink. Best of all, it glowed bright orange under UV lighting, which I thought looked very cool! (OK, so you’d probably have to be as childish as I am to really appreciate that.) 10 weeks later the colour was still strong. In fact, it was so strong that when I tried to bleach the last of it out so I could try a different colour, it wouldn’t budge. 45 minutes of strong bleach didn’t even slightly lighten it. I suppose this is the downside of Special Effect’s famous staying power – the possibility that you might never get rid of it!
I should stress here that the staying power of dyes varies not only from brand to brand, but from shade to shade. After the Atomic Pink, I tried Purple Smoke, a medium purple that is supposed to fade to a nice pastel pinky-purply-blue kind of colour. I dyed it over a couple of inches of freshly bleached roots and what was left of the Atomic Pink. It looked great. For all of 5 days. By the time I’d washed my hair a couple of times, the purple on my freshly-bleached roots had faded to a nasty silvery-beige colour, so I had to quickly re-dye. The next shade I tried was Special Effects “Blue Mayhem”, a nice bright electric blue colour. Blue Mayhem was fantastic, giving me gorgeous blue hair for a few weeks. It didn’t stain clothing as bad as the Atomic Pink, but then it didn’t last as long either. I can’t comment on any other shades as these are the only ones I’ve tried.
You can mix dyes together to produce your own shades, too. I'm back to pink again, but this time I mixed two-thirds Atomic Pink with one-third Cupcake Pink (a pastel shade), and I think I've found my perfect colour. Everyone says that pink hair suits me perfectly, so I'll probably stick with pink hair for now... well, at least until I get bored again!
If you’re looking to try out a crazy colour for a couple of days, then don’t use Special Effects or you could be stuck with it! But if, like me, you want to keep your unconventional colour as long as possible, then you have to at least give it a try. It's more expensive than other brands, but because it lasts so well I don't have to dye my hair so frequently, therefore it works out cheaper overall. As far as I know, haircrazy.com is still the only retailer outside of North America that sells it, but it sells out very quickly. If you can’t get any from haircrazy, then you could always order from an American site and pay by credit card. I’m quite tempted to upload a couple of pics of my hair to my website and link to them here, so people can see what these gorgeous colours look like, but I’m not sure anyone would be interested… if you are, leave me a comment and I’ll do so.

This product range is excellent has really vibrant colour ranges, some are UV reactive (glow under ultraviolet light) great for when your clubbing, not all the colours are bright and in your face there are some lovely burgandys, reds & purples that aren't too wild, staying power does vary from 3 weeks to 3 months, 7 leaves your hair feeling in really good condition, if you want it really bright you have to bleach hair 1st so use a really good conditioner if you've bleached your hair it will also help lock in your chosen colour as well.
It used to be really hard to get hold of as you had to purchase from US sites & cost a fortune, but i recently found a UK based site which is a lot cheaper then buying from the US..... the site is called www.tartandiva.co.uk I have ordered from them and maybe i've been lucky but i ordered in the mornings and my orders arrived next day, and you get personal responses to any emails you write.
But overall this dye in my opinion is great all the others I tried with bright ranges washed out and faded really quickly 2 days to 2weeks.... so I stick to Special Effects

Fantastic - cannot praise these dyes enough (I've tried 3 so far and am aiming to work my way more or less through the range). The Atomic Pink is mega-bright and brilliant if you want to be noticed in a crowd, also tried lue Haired Freak and Nuclear Red. These dyes are not too easy to get in the uk, but I got mine from www.beeunique.co.uk and delivery was within 24 hours.
Some of these colours glow under uv/black light also.
I have tried several other bright hair colour ranges but this is by far the best range I have found. The colour stayed in my hair between 4-7 weeks (depending on which colour I used - red and pink seemed to last longer, whereas blue lasted the 4 weeks before starting to fade).
Cannot praise these enough and would recommend to anyone to at least try them out before working their way through loads of other sub-standard ranges as I did. Save yourself money and time!

these are fantastic. i tried so many brands with some good results but nothing like these. so far i have used atomic pink, cupcake pink, blue haired freak, sonic green, nuclear red and hi-napalm orange. the first one was blue heaired freak and i forgot to order gloves when i got dye so ended up with blue hands for ages... needless to say i always keep a stock of gloves in the house for touch-up dye jobs. these dyes are not that easy to buy in the UK but i found www.beeunique.co.uk sells all the colours and i found the people there very helpful. There's a large help section which even i found useful - some of the tips were a little odd but some i did try and they do work. these veggie dyes are great for really intense vibrant colours and alhough they are more common than before and more and more brands are doing them i have never used another brand since discovering special effects. no doubt at some point there may be a colour that i dont like much but so far i love all the ones i've tried. You can buy these dyes from america fairly easy but if your in the uk like me then Beeunique is th palce to get them
