Ford Escape Hybrid. It's the 'greenest' SUV

but here's an article regarding "Teen Cars"...might give you some more ideas.

but I still vote for the Hybrid Escape. It also has a large federal tax incentive available & it has actually gone DOWN in price each year of its production ('05-'06-'07-'08)
I've driven one extensively & it is really FUN to drive.

In my experience, I DOUBLED my MPG (hybrid vs non-hybrid V6 Escape, both 4X4 ) & I drive like a complete idiot!

Also New York City taxi drivers have put HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of miles on theirs (withno problems, btw) & if they can survive that kind of abuse ( LOL ) I think they can handle a teen having fun !

I really like my Saturn Vue 4 cylinder with AWD. Of course, it really depends on how you'll be using it, where you intend to drive it, how much money you're willing to spend, and a myriad of other questions.
My first SUV is a 2002 Saturn Vue, with the 4 cylinder engine, and AWD. However, it's not really intended for serious off-road driving (like a Jeep, for example), or for towing heavy loads (1500 lbs limit). But in every other respect, it's certainly worth a look. The front seats are not the most comfortable I've ever sat on, but other than those limitations, and all cars have their limitations, I like my VUE a lot! The 4 cylinder is no longer available with AWD, but I'm not really in love with their V 6 engine for a few reasons: foreign-made, higher maintenance costs, toothed rubber timing belt, etc.
My other SUV is a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer LS 4x4, with the 4.2 liter in-line 6 cylinder engine, and that is just one awesome machine! But, then again again, there are some areas where my Saturn is the better vehicle. So, you have to weigh all the factors: no one vehicle is perfect, and what's good for one driver might not be good for another driver. My youngest has an '03 Chevy Tahoe LT with 8 passenger seating. Great truck...doesn't meet my needs...meets hers perfectly: 2 kids, 1 husband, 1 step kid, 1 sister, 1 nephew can all ride together with room for 1 more.
If you plan to do some serious off-roading, you might want to take a look at the new Jeep Patriot with the off-road package. They're a brand-new vehicle, so I can't tell you anything about them as to reliability, etc., but they might be what you're looking for. Also, check out the web for SUV comparisons.

Why, in the name of good sense do you want to put a new teen driver into a SUV??? Do you really hate this novice driver that much??? Tell him to forget the four wheelin' crap and get some practical experience about driving. He/she may live long enough to give you Grandchildren, at which point four wheelin' won't matter.

Think about an older 4cylinder 4x4 truck? but suvs wow hard to decide... 4 cylinders are good for mileage and ok for trails & such but to be good through bad places they have no weight so im thinkin your gunna have to decide which u want more: Gas mileage or fun haha

HUMMER H3 because:

-It will go anywhere the driver desires (try out the obstacle course at your local dealership).

-It gets 20 mpg.

-Its ONLY competition is the HUMMER H1 and H2.

-You can buy a new one for $29,500.

-Good size engine for teenagers so they don't get into trouble with the law.

-It is LIKE NOTHING ELSE.
