The reason why you have trouble seeing is because of the anatomy of your eyes. Due to the shape/size of the parts of your eye involved in vision the light isn't focusing on your retina correctly. Staring at the screen of a computer will not change this. It will cause computer vision syndrome. Symptoms include headaches, loss of focus, burning/tired eyes and double/blurred vision. The only group that is at risk for permanent eye damage are young children because there vision is still developing. “Many pediatric computer vision eye doctors believe that heavy computer use among children puts them at risk for early myopia. They point to several recent studies as evidence that computers can have a negative impact on a child's vision”

Anyways I am guessing you’re not a young child so your vision will not get any worse from being on the computer/watching TV. Computer vision syndrome is not permanent when you experience it that just means your eyes need a break. every 20 minutes, focus the eyes on an object 20 feet (6 meters) away for 20 seconds. Also, the use of over-the-counter artificial tear solutions and computer glasses can reduce the effects of CVS.

the advice given here for reducing eye strain is all good. I'd just like to add that you should adjust your screen properly. The screen should be at arms length and your eyes level with the top of the screen. Laptops are not suitable for heavy usage as you can't do this with them and you need to add a seperate screen/keyboard. Big computer firms do not allow people to use laptops all day. Also make sure that you sit at 90 degrees to any light source , e.g. dont' face the window, dont' have a light directly behind you. Strain is temporary. There is no evidence that computers damage your eyes permanently . If there was then all computer professionals would have eyesight issues and be suing thepeople they work for.

Yes it will. When you focus on an object close up, like a computer screen, your eyes are accommodating. The accommodation is due to your muscles on the inside of your eye changing the shape of your lens. This causes a force toward the front of your eye. By doing this too long it will cause your eye to hold this shape making you become nearsighted. While genetics has a lot to do with it, there are far more people nearsighted today then there were 25 years ago, mainly due to computers. You should get a pair of prescription reading glasses for your computer work.

They have proved that sitting too close to the t.v., reading in light not bright enough, and staring at the computer too long won't damage your eyes. Your eyes can get tired and feel sore from doing these things but it doesn't cause any permanent damage.
That's the consensis this week, anyway. It could change next week-LOL.

From experience you don't want to be far sighted at an earlier age than you have to be. Squinting while reading is bad and really will make it worse over time. I don't know about genetics in the whole world but all the females got glasses (different reasons) at the same time in my family.

I asked a similar question to yours a couple months ago. My best answer:
hm im not sure but you can watch for t.v for long time but it has to be far away... if u have a big screen t.v and sit quite far away then its ok..and for comp ,like every 20 mins u should look away and give ur eyes a break and then go back on ur comp..also i dont know how to this but you have to set ur pc screen to a higher refresh rate, the higher the refresh rate is,the crappier the tings in ur screen will be but set it high but not too high..ur eyes are more important then ur viewing experience
EDIT: HERE IS HOW TO EDIT UR COMP REFRESH RATE: Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME users
Click Start / Settings / Control Panel, double-click the display icon.
In display, click the settings tab.
In settings, click the adapter tab.
Within this window you will be able to increase and decrease the computer monitor's refresh rate. We recommend that you set the refresh rate to at least 75Hz, if supported.
Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP users
Click Start / Settings / Control Panel, double-click the display icon.
In display, click the settings tab.
Click the Advanced button.
Click the Monitor tab.
Within this window you will be able to increase and decrease the computer monitor's refresh rate. We recommend that you set the refresh rate to at least 75Hz, if supported.
google search for more info it also depends if u have CRT monitor or LCD
**And by "far away from the tv" he means five feet or more.

Your eyesight is completely and utterly dependent on genetics. Using the computer more, or less, will not damage your eyesight or make it any better.
Using the computer for long periods of time can cause eyestrain, but it's not going to either make your eyes better, or damage your eyesight.

Looking at a tv screen and computer for long periods of time can cause you to become nearsighted. Since your eyes adapt to the light, the shape of your eye may change to adapt at looking at things that are close. Therefore causing you to become nearsighted.

Yes it will. It will cause you eye strain. Once your eyes is strained, it can never be relieved. Genetics does not affect much.
