Actually, in meditation, the point is to releave all thoughts, includings thoughts of God. Being Taoist, I personally dont believe in god, and in turn, i meditate about an hour a day. There is no real way to teach meditation, but i go in a quite, isolated room, breath deeply, as i inhale, i say "I am breathing in" as I exhale, I say "I am breathing out" i think of nothing, completely empty my mind
When it comes to beliefs about God, well, that is the most controversial subject that there basically is. I beleive in a mother nature, but no god. And i have found peace and harmonly, as well as happiness, within myself

CONREGATION CHANTING OF THE HOLY NAME OF THE LORD IS THE SIMPLEST WAY OF DOING MEDITATION
Srimad-Bhagavatam 12.3.51-2

"The most important factor in this Age of Kali, which is an ocean of faults, is that one can be free from all contamination and become eligible to enter the kingdom of God simply by chanting the holy names. The self-realization that was achieved in the Satya millennium by meditation, in the Treta millennium by the performance of different sacrifices, and in the Dvapara millennium by worship of Lord Krsna can be achieved in the Age of Kali simply by chanting the holy names, Hare Krishna."

I think you will find the book Meditation by Eknath Easwaran extremely helpful:
http://www.amazon.com/Meditation-Eight-Point-Program-Translating-Spiritual/dp/0915132664/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-8011724-5637642?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1179189588&sr=8-1
not only does it put the topic in easy to understnd terms but is helpful for people who may already meditate every day. This kind and loving man has a broad appeal to individuals of any ethnic background or religion (yes Christians can benefit from meditation as well). He simply instructs you to find a mantra that is meaningful to you, be that calling on the name of God, Jesus, Rama, Om, ect. I hope you will search out this book and share it with others as I am, it is a beautiful spiritual guide. And, you can check out his website here:

Best of luck to you my friend.

I believe in Gods plural. But I try to meditate every day. I simply draw a circle around me mentally, sort of like the four walls of a church. Then I calm my thoughts and just let things fly. You can work out a lot of things when you give your thoughts free reighn and talk to the Gods.

The simplest way is to control ur feelings, when we pour tea into a cup that is full, it overflows.. so to gain something, we should empty ourselfs ie our mind. Then i think soft musics will help u to gain concentration n to free up ur mind. To get near to god, more than feeling that..experience it.. Think gud, Do gud, Forgive, love..when u practise all these things u ll naturally get closer to god.

The word Hare is the form of addressing the energy of the Lord, and the words Krishna and Rama are forms of addressing the Lord Himself. Both Krishna and Rama mean the supreme pleasure, and Hara is the supreme pleasure energy of the Lord, changed to Hare in the vocative. The supreme pleasure energy of the Lord helps us to reach the Lord. . .
These three words, namely Hare, Krishna and Rama, are the transcendental seeds of the maha-mantra. The chanting is a spiritual call for the Lord and His energy, to give protection to the conditioned soul. This chanting is exactly like the genuine cry of a child for its mother's presence. Mother Hara helps the devotee achieve the Lord Father's grace, and the Lord reveals Himself to the devotee who chants this mantra sincerely. . .
No other means of spiritual realization is as effective in this age of quarrel and hypocrisy as the maha-mantra:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

There is only one place in this world where you can literally find GOD. and that place is in the inner-most-core of your heart.
just close your eyes, and mentally assert your self that HE is there in your heart.
if any thoughts/worries enter your mind, just ignore them. they will slowly disappear like uninvited guests. there is no better form of meditation than this.
Patience is very essential to materialize the effects of the above sentence. Also, regular practice is essential (at least half-hour in morning & half-hour in evening). it is not child's play. Lord Krishna says in Bhagvat-Gita that only one in several thousands is able to do it.

focus on your breathing, once you manage to keep your mind still, like a quiet lake (zero thoughts), work on disolving your self to realize we are all part of one. that's as close to God as meditation gets.
