my son is the same age right now and he won't let anyone feed him. although i do have a highchair i can't get him to sit in that either. they just see other kids doing it themselves and he wants to be a big kid. there's nothing wrong with letting him feed himself. just give him solid foods that aren't so messy, hot dogs, toast, pop tarts, fries. something that wont make a terrible mess if he does whip it on the floor. he's got teeth let him use them. although using forks and spoons is sometimes a bad idea when going with the runny liquid types because they will throw things past the drop cloth. let him use his fingers and just take his shirt off. just stay away from pudding, jello, or anything that would stain.

They have those little fold up booster chairs that strap onto a regular chair. They cost about 15- 20 dollars, less if you find one at a garage sale. They have a seat belt so you don't have to worry about them falling out. Finger foods are great for this age or just cut stuff up into small pieces. The gerber graduates are good. I usually bring a travel chair with me, unless i am at my mother in laws because she has her own.

Well, if he will not eat unless he's feeds himself, you probably have no other choice but to let him. You can get booster seats, or one of those high chair/booster seats that hook onto and hang from your table. You can also get a shower curtain, a tarp, or a painters tarp (the clear plastic stuff) or something big enough and easy enough to clean to put underneath him.

Set him in a chair at the table or on the floor,....but please let him eat on his own. I have a 5 year old that i am still feeding because his sitter insisted that she feed him instead of eating on his own and i can not get him to eat food at all by himself! PLEASE LET HIM EAT! I know it can get messy but kids wash and so do tables and floors. Good Luck!

They also have those little chairs that hook onto a table--there are metal legs on top of the table and metal legs under the table--my kids used them. They fold up so that you may take them to a restaurant, the park, etc. That way your child is also sitting right at the table with everyone else, eating with the family. It encourages them to eat.

I dont understand what the problem is, its normal and shows signs of him being independant, which has to be a good thing... if its the mess you are worried about buy a waterproof cover for the floor and why not invest in one of those little toddler seats that you can easily fix to an adult dinning room chair...

You could make it a fun time for him...set up a small children's table on a tile floor (easy clean-up!) or have a picnic outside on nice days. You can even lay a plastic tablecloth on the floor and let him sit on it and eat. Eating on his own is his way of saying he is independant now so he'll be irked if you try to take that away from him...so let him eat at your table by himself or be creative. :)

Yes let him eat on his own even if messy....dont let him eat near cloth or carpet...take his clothes off so you can just toss him in tub. Give him clean foods to eat.
