Gnerally, skid plates will protect the front diff, oil pan, tranny pan, and the gas tank. I cant say specifically on the F150 but that is the general list. They keep the things holding liquids protected so that you dont puncture them and need a tow.

Well, there is one at the rear of the trans/front of the transfer case that bolts onto the frame on both sides and one that is part of the fuel tank retaining system to protect the tank.

Those are the only factory skid plates,but there are a bunch of aftermarket goodies to cover it all up if you want.

Just the underside of the engine...the front differental and transmission are not protected.
