Different languages around the world do have their own sign language with some similarities. For example, Brazillian sign language has a few signs that are the same as American Sign Language, but for the most part they are vastly different.
The same holds true with other foreign languages around the world.
The only exception is the French form of sign language. It is very much like ASL, because ASL is derived from them. For that reason American deaf people have virtually no communcation barrier when it comes to signing with the French

I wish.. It would be so much easier to communicate with all Deaf people if sign language was universal. However, sign language is another language like any other, In the US we learn ASL (American Sign Language) in Britain they use BSL and so on; Every country has their own sign language... Like someone else above mentioned depending on what part of the country you live there may be variations of certain signs.. The same way a person from New York and a person from Tennesse will have differnet accents or different use of language, same goes with ASL.

No, sign languages are not all the same!!! There is American Sign Language which is used in US and Canada. There is a Japanese form of sign language that is used in that movie with Brad Pitt, the name of the movie starts with a B, but i can't think of the name of it, but anyway, each country has it's own sign language for the most part. And even ASL has different variations just as english does with accents. There is also a version of Signed Language that is used in Deaf schools called SEE, signed exact english. It uses English word order with all of the "to be" verbs and word endings.

Sign language is a natural language like any other. Therefore it is not the same in other countries. Even American and British sign is different. I manage a group of QC personnel in China and just hired 2 deaf workers. I speak American Sign from childhood and their language is much different.
However, we can communicate much easier than hearing persons of different language backgrounds. Gestures and expressions can say a lot.

In Dutch sign language there are four 'dialects' I am told, because there used to be four boarding schools for the deaf, each having its own version of the language. But I have heard that they all can understand each other easily.
