First of all...i don't think thats a vista problem...your friends may not be able to open the file because of your word. If you're using word 2007 and your friends dont have that particular version they will not be able to open it and if you dont have word 2007 then i have no clue of what the problem could be.
If you have word 2007 and want your friends to be able to open it, you will have to save your file in 97-2003 format.
